Cee245 823 #1 Posted July 2, 2019 Hey everyone, I have here a 85 417A I believe. My plan is to use our 416H for winter use and get the 417A running (got the new stator) and use it for mowing duty on my small .5 acre lot. Dang 3 kids and wife get in the way of my progress of this. ZXT 2,401 #2 Posted July 2, 2019 What ideas are you looking for? Looks like a pretty solid tractor already. All it takes is about 30 minutes to get one running.. Surely you can find that much time!
953 nut 58,749 #3 Posted July 2, 2019 Looks like a good solid machine under there somewhere, have the kids and wife help get it out there grazing on the lawn!
peter lena 9,158 #4 Posted July 2, 2019 cee245, looks like a pretty clean unit, take advantage of that with a very thorough BASELINE SERVICE ,after you get the stator replaced. another issue you might consider is to punch or drill some venting holes on that drive belt guard to help cool down that rear cylinder head area. i have seen a total perforated belt guard that really got it done for air intake and heat flow out. just an idea , pete
Cee245 823 #5 Posted July 2, 2019 I am planning on getting to this over the holiday. I agree the first step is replacing the stator and then getting a new battery, then changing all fluids and filters. After that I'll see if it starts and go from there. I have lots of parts that came with it. I'm getting excited to see it get put to use. Cory
Cee245 823 #6 Posted July 2, 2019 I have noticed while starting on this, (85 417 A) the Eaton 1100(I believe) moves WAY easier than my 97 416H. It almost feels like it's a gear shift in neutral. Makes me think something is completely broken inside tranny? My 416 makes a clicking sound and is hard to push when off. I know this is normal. Cory
ZXT 2,401 #7 Posted July 2, 2019 Not sure if the Eaton has a plastic slide plate to actuate the lever on the hydro unit like a Sundstrand does, but if it were broken, and they do deteriorate over time, then it would put up little or no resistance. I'd inspect the linkage before I drew any conclusions.
JCM 10,058 #8 Posted July 2, 2019 Great tractor you have there,I agree with @peter lena on the baseline service. I have a 1986 417-8 and there is not much that tractor will not accomplish, it does use some fuel similar to the 520-H but not much sounds better than a twin cylinder Kohler. Good luck with it you have chosen a great model and very desirable as well. 1
The Tuul Crib 7,338 #9 Posted July 3, 2019 Doesn’t look like it would take a whole lot to get it up and mowing again! Looks like a real clean tractor!
ericj 1,579 #10 Posted July 3, 2019 the longer a hydro trans sits the easier it will roll, if it's been sitting a long time you may not hear the clicking noise of the 416-H. eric j

My bad.
Cee245 823 #12 Posted July 3, 2019 @ericj, that's good to know. It has been sitting for a few years I was told when I bought it. I figured there was something going to be wrong with the tranny. I'll post any updates and more than likely questions that I'll probably need answered. Thanks for the replies guys! Cory
ericj 1,579 #13 Posted July 3, 2019 I went to an auction today that had a 520-H and a 520-HC. Didn't get either one brought more then I wanted to spend of course, but I knew the gentleman that bought the HC. He didn't have a trailer with him so I hauled it home for him. After pumping the tires up it rolled real nice and easy over to the trailer and up and on, the tranny never made a sound. We actually got it started in his shop and didn't try and move it but the hydro lift worked. eric j
