Keeping Patina On Tractor

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

Have a Commando 8 that I recently picked up. I got some replacement parts for things that needed to be replaced, and I want to keep the tractor with the original patina.

What works best to keep this? I've heard motor oil and penetrating oil.

Also, how should I rub it in? Should i use steel wool? Or just a cloth?

Thanks!

I have used WD-40, 0000 Steel Wool and 600 Wet/Dry sand paper with nice results.

What about something like the silicon lubricant spray for like garage doors rollers?

I recently did what you are contemplating doing, I cleaned the surface with a large grout sponge with simple green cleaner and then clean water, let dry and then used a scotch brite pad to remove minor rust, clean again ,let dry and spray WD 40 on a clean rag and rub it into the original finish and have been very pleased with the results, you can take a look at the results on the topic of original patina with shiny wheels, good luck, I think you may be happy with the results. The tractor is a 1977 C-120 under JCM. Good luck.

@JCM  I'm assuming you have to keep reapplying over time?

Not really sure ,I got the idea from other members on here because I wanted to keep the original look and did not want to do a full resto / paint job, did that 20 years ago and now just want to enjoy the tractor without scratching the paint job up, but you are probably correct about reapplying

I used 0000 steel wool and Windex to clean my surfaces and then more Windex and rags to do final cleaning. Then I used a matte spray clear on it and it looked just like it did before I started, but cleaner. It wasn’t artificially shiny and  it doesn’t attract dirt and still looks exactly like it did the day I applied it a couple years ago. 3929C582-7E5F-4DCE-9C22-A67490656ACD.thumb.jpeg.e5860c383cbe7b4bb06e7be870748d1f.jpeg5F44DFB0-CC41-4581-91CB-777D9B9F6A4C.jpeg.129fdbc509286948f99e8d434f5b2789.jpegBAD2157F-8745-49BE-8688-5679B28E5948.jpeg.997948ccbe4e62ef4f1c8cba204ca945.jpeg
