The Tuul Crib

 Been trying to get my K321  running.

I can get a fairly smooth idle but when 

I throttle up I sputters like crazy. I’ve tried setting the float several times and still the same thing. Its puffing out black smoke and the plug is black as well. It’s definitely on the rich side. Any ideas?

What have you done to the carb so far?

Disassemble. Clean. Reassembly.?

It’s a new Chinese one and I’ve adjusted 

the float three times.

I took my new Chinese one apart three times.

Basically rebuilt it each time.

Double triple check all your settings according to the Kohler manual.

 

 

After the third disassembly I got sick of it and ordered the correct one from Lincoln.

It doesn't lean out at all when you tighten the high speed screw?

No its not helping at all . Im going to try new points and condenser and see if that 

helps.

Have you taken apart that new carb and checked it?

 

Mine had metal shavings in the bowl.

If the engine will run with the top high speed needle closed all the way, there is a problem with that carb. It may idle but it should not run at high speed because it should be starving for fuel.

I've had problems with some of those carbs flooding for some reason. Never did figure out exactly what was going on.

Apparently an issue with the clearances and tolerances being a little too generous in those cheap carbs.

I called it a learning experience and bought a Kohler carburetor.

Well i went and got new points and condenser and im going from there. When i got this motor i left the old ones in it . They looked ok but maybe they weren’t.

Any luck with the points? 953nut posted a guide for static timing.  Very helpful!

Disassembly the carb completely and use compressed air to blow through ever port. 

Something has to be stopped up inside the carb. 

Or its not been machined correctly.

I don't know what exactly may be the cause of your problem, however related to the Chinese carburetors and to me having a bit of an obsessive nature and spending a lot of time researching carburetors and their respective Kohler engines in Brian Miller's site, I found that none of them have the right tolerances for a particular engine the way they should such as venturi dimensions, needle holes positions and locations.I always duplicated his recommendations and specs when replacing a carburetor for a specific engine and I solved numerous carburetor issues that way. Many times an engine came to me that I just could not make right regardless of how much and how many times I cleaned a carb or bought a cheap Chinese one. However when I followed his specs and got exactly the right carb everything worked fine.

Not sure if it has anything to do with Randy's issue or not but just as a point of information I took a Chinese carburetor off and put on a Kohler today as stated above. The Chinese carburetor inside throat size was nearly 1/16" smaller then the Kohler # 30 carburetor.

Is the #30 the same throat size as a walbro? Thats what was on this k321 when i got it. I would put it back on if it wasn’t for the choke orientation .

#30 carburetors can be different internally depending what engine they were used on. Some earlier K321s had 1-1/8" exhaust valves compared to later ones that hove 1-3/8" exhaust valves. Corresponding #30s also had different venturi and throttle bore dimensions. It is also important to have the right high speed needle adjuster in it. Most of the times carburetors and their parts have been changed several times over the years without paying attention to what is actually correct. To start with if you know the valve size in your engine or at least the size on the intake port? I am not saying that this is your problem, however if you carburetor is undersized for your engine it is possible that engine creates too much suction therefor flooding engine .

A bad condenser will cause the throttle up sputtering issue.

I took the plug and I do have spark but it 

seems weak. I’m hoping the points and 

condenser help!
