My 1970 GT14 rebuild

Here we go, starting a post on my rebuild,  lost all pics of teardown, (phone died) trying to retrieve them, 

 

Started electrolysis tank for frame and misc parts other will be sandblasted, using washing soda, rebar and battery charger, my ad a 12v car battery, will see how it works like this.  Also have post in transmission and transaxles, gt14  90-2062

I’ll tag in for the adventure. Love to follow the GT14 builds. I’m a glutton for punishment as these are my favored beasts.

Definitely want to watch this one come together as my youngest son owns one and at some point in the future we will restore his.  I too really like these hydro “Big Wheels” and can’t wait to see how yours will look when you get it finished.

Flipped frame, and parts, steering link and fan gear must not of had good contact with negative wire so used some safety wire, see if that works. That is about 8 or 9 hrs

So I've been working on this for a while, phone died and I lost some pics.

Engine is rebuilt, 020 over piston, 020 under crank, rebuilt starter, other parts sandblasted, primed and painted. 

Mower deck in progress may make a post on rebuild. 

Built the bike for a friend, may auction off for wounded vet program

I do not  It was a new Walmart beach cruiser,  was rootbeer brown, disassembled everything, painted and replaced tires, added motor and lights reassembled

Started working on this again, question, can these spindles be saved or just start looking for replacement. Plan on putting bronze bushings in axle

I bored out my axle to 1” and then installed 7/8” ID/1” OD bronze bushings. I reamed them out, drilled a hole for the grease fitting and they worked great. Also installed thrust washers and bearings between the spindle and axle. Steers pretty nice.

I would find some bar stock and 

make a new one.

I had no other option at the time but they don’t seem to be to complicated to make if you can cut the weld on the bottom.

Thanks Tool crib.  What type      of bar stock is best for             the spindle.

CRS Cold Rolled Steel if you are welding it,... the tool steels (with high nickel and chromium content become very brittle at the weld) will fail when welded. JMO from a machinist stand point.

I have found some  of the cold roll steel 

stock at tractor supply. If you have a 

local machine shop they should have

if as well .

Hay all,  working on some bushings, can anyone give me some specs on this spacer, between pulley and linkage, ( see parts diagram # 84) Is it a steel spacer or brass flange bushing?         ID x OD x length.                 P/N # 100431 or 7435

7435 can be replaced by 100309 which is still available you need to add a couple washers as spacers as flange is thinner

 

7435 is steel 3/8" bore  Flange is 3/4" OD  5/16" thick  Shaft portion is 3/16" long  7/16" OD

So I'm working on all pivot points, Going to put brass/bronze bushings in Getting axle bushing, Spindle bushing, Steering shaft bushings, So started looking at brake handle and linkage and bushing 7879 were not the only bushings, P/O made bushing blocks , the shaft wore the side plate egg shaped, so cleaning thing up,going to weld and redrill holes, took some pics and test fit linkage. Steering fan will get bushing and new pin.

I looked at the thin metal bushings 7879 as most of mine were worn out...but $15.40 too much!!  Where did you get yours??  I am going with some nylon ones from McMaster.
