Calling all John Deere eagle eyes!

A friend of a friend snapped this picture, this is at a barn sale.  Can anyone identify the possible make and model?  The tractor needs to be split, it “needs a rearend” and I’m trying to justify if it’s worth what they’re asking.  “It ran good” 15-20 years ago.

Kevin I can't tell you what that tractor is or really anything about it but the way I would base a price of something that doesn't run is purely on scrap value minus Transportation cost.

 

If they're asking anything more than that, unless it's a rare model, it's just not worth it.

Being all yellow would suggest it is an industrial or construction tractor. Not worth much if it doesn't run.  Parts are worth more than the whole. Any idea what motor is in it?

Guessing early eighties vintage.  Gotta ask yourself why was it parked if ran good?

I was thinking industrial Deere as well, apparently the rear end went out.  It was his uncles and they have to sell everything and clean up the property.

My wife told me “if it’s what you really want, go get it.”  That usually ends with an “I told you so” moment, so I really want to know what I’m getting into.

I found a 1010w on tractordata’s list... it looks close based on the dash and fenders!  Anyone agree it might be the ballpark?

 

40 horsepower category... if anything a possible donor of parts to the AC WD-45?  I don’t know how the backhoe attaches or detaches...

@pullstart, Most likely it's 1960s, and either a 1000 series gas (ie 1010 1020 1030...) or a 2000 diesel series (ie 2010 2020 2030...)possibly sn 800 series also......neighbor had a green 820 when I was a kid 4 cyl diesel just couldn't kill that thing but no loader just 3pt attachments, FIL just sold a 2010 dozer engines were more prone to problems than the transaxle ...IMHO don't go past $500.

Thanks, Jeff!  He’s asking 1500, I was thinking offering 1000.  I think the loader and backhoe are worth well more than that... but he’s in a bind and needs to get it out of there.  I guess going to check it out on site with the offer would be more persuasive than over the phone... maybe the whole deal depends on how hard it would be to load it on a trailer!

I didn't even notice the backhoe! It might worth a 1000 but I dunno . Yah you need to go check it out. Maybe it's got a 3 or 4 jug  Perkins in it?

The yellow paint certainly makes it look like an industrial model. Then again. Back in 74 when I worked at Ford tractor we would paint a “new” farm tractor yellow to sell to the highway dept or county, etc. try to look at the front axle pivot pinto make sure it’s not totally wore out. 

     Also sitting -5?years all the cylinders probable/defiantly have some water/pitting in them.   I rebuilt a few cylinders on my Oliver then just started replacing them. 

For 500-1000 you can’t go wrong. You can sell the loader for that,  especially with the JD name on it.  Offer $1000 if he’ll let you start the engine where it sits, 500 if it doesn’t easily start.  If it runs the bad resr end might still work enough to load it.  That would be a BEAR to load as a dead machine. 

I paid $500 for my Oliver in 95. The tranny was shot and I got a complete Trang and rear end off a tractor that was in a fire for another $500

JD almost always used their own engines in farm & industrial tractors.

I don't know a lot about the 1000 series, I do know that the 2010 was one of the worst tractors that JD ever made. They were under engineered and plagued with problems, transmissions being one of the main problems.

Neat trick an old boss of mine did a couple decades ago....

 

He'd been half-heartedly looking for a 73 to 79 Ford F250.

He had a little cash. He had great credit. He also had a lot of patience.

He found one that was very very solid and wanted to go look at it and also found out somehow that the guy who owned it was in near desperate need of money.

 

he was 99% sure he was going to buy it. Just a matter of how much cash.

I don't remember the exact figures but he put his - lowball amount - in one pocket in a clip.

He then strategically-placed $100 bills in his other pockets.

Him and his buddy went over there with the trailer and poked around at it for a while and then he literally tossed his low ball pile on the hood and said there it is. Let's do it.

The dude selling it hemmed and hawed for a bit and finally refused it.

He tossed another hundred in from another pocket.

Repeat. Repeat.

 

He ended up getting a smoking deal. It's amazing what the actual site of actual cash will do to people.

Parts at best I would guess every gear box is full of water tire dry rot hydraulic lines all bad. If it's free maybe, if someone will take on the job of moving it. Better have a good which

keeping in mind I have no idea what you're towing capabilities are but that could easily weigh 6 or 8 thousand pounds.

 

add to the fact that it does not move and the tires are probably not in great shape and it could really be a challenge to get it on a trailer............

If you have say 5 grand to spend for a useable machine, because that's I think what it will take minimum to get that useable keep looking. Worse thing than not having a backhoe is having one that don't work and out a grand.

I just conveniently pulled Norman out of storage today... something tells me so long as we bring another truck to drag it on, we’ll be pretty alright getting it home

Here you are with a link...  @Darb1964 I tend to document random shop goings on here for a quick reference.  I seem to have the “I can do that” mentality around the shop no matter what tools it requires me to invest in!  By the way, welcome to Redsquare if I haven’t already!

When I first saw the picture I thought it might be a 300 industrial.With further picture comparison it might be a 1010.If it is keep in mind that gas or diesel it will have a sleeve deck engine.This is a sleeve design that has all the sleeves brazed to a deck plate.The only place for engine parts for this engine is JD itself.The sleeve deck is over $1100. No one and I mean no one makes it but Deere.This back hoe probably uses the rotary swing hydraulics instead of normal cylinders.This type of rotater is similar to a hydraulic motor.I have been told that this  a very expensive unit to repair.If I were interested I would find out what model this is and talk to a JD dealer about support for it.My guess is that the cost to repair it is why it has been parked so long.
