Digger 66 3,476 #27 Posted December 17, 2018 Ya know , that's interesting and I will remove that safety switch and hit it with contact cleaner but my gut tells me it's somewhere in the fuel delivery . It makes no sense what the difference would be but I cant deny the fact that when I pressed the primer bulb while cranking with the starter , she fired right up . She's on the bench now being torn down and cleaned up .
Digger 66 3,476 #28 Posted December 31, 2018 (edited) I just wanted to update this for anyone following along . I've been through the wiring and replaced the existing wire with 14 ga automotive wire . While I had it apart I Rebuilt the carb Replaced all 4 wheels Replaced the two pinion drive gears . Changed the grease in the differential ( not really a differential , more of a 90 degree gearbox ) Lubed the cables Mower starts / runs and moves beautifully Electric start is still slow and weak . I jumped it direct with the battery in my pickup ( 800 cca ) and the dang thing nearly spun out of the garage . Seems to me Toro decided to use this battery ( on the left ) based on the space between the gas tank and thwe flippy-uppy-thingy for the rear bag rather than the cranking requirements of a 6.5 HP engine . This battery delivers a whopping 45 amps for 5 seconds . Hardly enough juice to spin a 6.5 HP engine let alone START it IMO . I know the starter will handle the amperage so I'm going to replace all the wiring with 10 ga and fit a motorcycle battery ( on right ) onto the deck in the space of the puny battery . I should be able to find a battery that will deliver upwards of 100 amps to fit . Stay tuned , I may make the newspaper Edited December 31, 2018 by Digger 66
Digger 66 3,476 #29 Posted January 13, 2019 SUCCESS !! All done , fires right up , runs & moves beautifully ! Fitted it with a YTX4L-BS AGM motorcycle battery that provides 50 CCA of power . The mounting is a bit ramshackle but it's sturdy and will work fine .
