71_Bronco 1,072 #1 Posted October 1, 2018 (edited) So last night, with the help of my dad, we pulled out all the parts that use to be my Bronco 14 to start re-building, after a few years of it being apart. First thing I tore into is the motor. Spun the input pully, and felt compression, and heard the pft noise as the valve inside opened. that's a good sign. Pulled the carb for a rebuild (actually looked pretty clean), popped off the breather for a clean / new filter, and took the head off to inspect the piston / valves. I also checked the oil (going to drain anyways), which was a light caremel color. Was half expecting it to be dark sludge. Piston and bore looks good, no issues there. Little bit of carbon build-up on the underside of the head and near the valves, but I was able to clean it all up nicely. Went to the side of the block to check the points, and found this... Made my scratch my head, as this is where the points should be, at least in all the videos / pictures / reading I've done in preparation for this build. Then I took a look at where the coil is, and found this... Not the typical coil I am use to seeing on a Kohler (this is a K321S). After doing some reading, it looks like my K321S is a breaker-less style ignition. I found some info (some from here in older posts) regarding this type of system, and how to convert it to the typical points set-up. My question though is, do I have to change to the typical points? From what I've read, the breaker-less style parts are very hard to find, and very expensive when they are found. Is there any way to check the parts I have? And sorry about the mis-leading title, thought I'd have a little fun with the play on words EDIT: Forgot to add, my motor is a Kohler K321S, Spec 60124b, with a serial number of 3121504 Edited October 1, 2018 by 71_Bronco

pfrederi 18,690 #3 Posted October 1, 2018 There are some test in the Kohler manual for the breakerless ignition you have. No need to put in points if it still works... 1
ebinmaine 72,748 #4 Posted October 1, 2018 I'm with @pfrederi Paul on this one. Those breaker less ignition systems are well known to a $$$$ problem when they fail. They're also known to last 40 years or more and... Not fail. If your system is still working... I'd not " fix it " until it's broken. That might be ummm..... Pointless. I've saved a thread done by @Aldon so I know how to fix one I have here that actually is not working.
953 nut 60,096 #5 Posted October 1, 2018 If the trigger breakerless ignition is working well it is a wonderful system. I would stick with it and do the swap to points and coil if or when the time comes.
