Hot Engine slowly dying after PTO engaged

Recommended Posts

I have a 1991 520h and I can mow for hours on end until I turn the tractor off and then restart it. The tractor restarts nice and easy warm but when I engage the PTO (mower deck) it slowly kills the engine. If I disengage the PTO it revs right back up. It is an electric clutch. I was thinking if it was a kill switch wrong I would imagine it would kill it a lot faster than allowing me to cycle on and off the PTO. Any thoughts?

Watch the governor, does it pull the carburetor fully open when the engine is dying?  If the throttle is open and the power is low, clean the carburetor.  If no improvement, check compression and adjust the valves.  It could be a loose valve seat and they can run pretty good and have near normal compression till it is too late for an easy repair.

Check the battery voltage before and after engaging the PTO.  Low voltage will cause poor engine performance.

Wheel horse 416H that was converted into an eight speed.  Onan engine with 627 Hours.  PM with phone # and best time to call for more details.  Need to sell to make room for other projects, and I am tired of working on it.  Price is firm.

Can anyone tell me how to get at the 9 pin connector under the battery platform on my 520H. I have pulled the battery out and the front plate off the dash (under the gauges) and the left side panel. Do I have to take the entire center of the tractor apart?

My 518-H runs and mows for about 15 minutes then stalls.  It'll rest for 10, then run for 15 and stall.  The oil level is right, air cleaner is clear and it has new spark plugs.  Sounds like overheating, but it isn't really very hot to the touch.  Onan twin.  I brought it to the CT Onan dealer and he couldn't fix it, but frankly, they work on generators all day and I don't think they wanted to bother.  Any ideas?

Parting out my 1990 416 H.  No luck selling it whole, don't like hydros.  Transmission is sold (being used to save a 520).  Selling the following:

Lift cylinder and control valve with 3 of the four hoses.   $100.00

Other parts as well, let me know what you need.  Pictures upon request.

I can ship any part I have if it will fit in a box from the post office.
