I found @Sparky‘s post from making his tractor a round fender machine.  I’ll be using my 552 project “Poppy” and the 753 leftovers for parts to make Jada’s “seat swap” a reality.

I think I’m going to try drilling out the spot welds on these tabs and swap the entire back half, as I think they would have done in the factory during change overs.

While I putter with cutting and grinding... Grampa gave the girls some different go-kart tires to try...

Finding the spot welds might be the hardest part!  I wire brush a little, grind a little and feel a little for a clue as to where they are.  A pilot drill, then a spot weld cutter are great tools.  If you miss a spot weld, you know it.  The center plug simply falls out!

Pilot hole forthe spot weld cutter.  Good idea. I'll have to remember that one.

It’s quite obvious that these were never intended to come apart again!  I wonder if this bottom lip has any?  I wonder how many are in this bottom lip?

Wow.  Three tacks per tab, a weld to cut by the pillow block, then a spot weld every 1/2” or so on that bottom seam!

I’d like to say we’re halfway there, but I know that 1/32 is more like it...

I stand corrected, only 3 tacks on the front tab!  I decided to drill then through, then fill the holes when I weld the pieces together.

The two holes marked with an X had rust come through when I hit the center, a clear indication it wasn’t actually a welded spot.

The 753 rear ended and the 857 tower are different widths...

Ok, scratch that.  I was measuring inside vs outside, my mistake.  All is well in the Pullstart garage, if only you can find what you’re working on!  There are two active Wheel Horse projects, the dump box tractor and a go kart in one workspace.

This later model tower is much easier to separate!  I have drilled 1/8” pilot holes halfway through, followed by 1/4”, followed by a small flat blade screwdriver and a hammer to tear the rest of the welds apart.  It’s working quite well, but I’ll have to cut the welds on the lift arm block still.

I’m beginning to believe that the 1/2” high flange on the 753 box was part of the weld cell.  I can’t see how it is able to fit together.  I think I can grind a corner off the bottom of the two side tabs to slide it together and still be able to locate everything tightly.
