I'll probably go over it lightly with a 5" flap disk to quickly knock off the worst of the rust, then go to a paint stripping disk like you mentioned, which will conform fairly well to the depressions without doing much damage to the good metal, and then use an acid bath to remove the rest of the rust in the small pits. With this approach I should be able to get most of the rust off with the angle grinder so that it doesn't have to sit very long in the acid bath. The original rubber mats will cover almost all of the repaired rust spots, except for a few small spots on the outer edges, which I'll touch up with a dab of Bondo.

I think I'll try a less aggressive approach, like soaking the foot rests in paint remover overnight, A needle scaler will remove the paint and rust, works well. Rather than a rubber mat you could use some Anti-Skid paint additive and roll on the final finish on the treads using the same paint color or black.

Blue Chips 104 #24605 Posted September 24 Just now, 953 nut said: A needle scaler will remove the paint and rust, works well. I've found a needle scaler useful on lots of occasions. Its effectiveness seems to depend on the type and depth of rust and the type of substrate. Sometimes it has worked well, and sometimes not. I might try a quick shot with the scaler just to see what happens. It's fairly thick sheet metal, so I don't think the scaler would stretch it unless I overdo it with the pressure. If it were thinner sheet I'd avoid using a scaler. That's very useful stuff, although the original mats are still in good shape...still pliable and no cracks...and I like their looks. I found new plastic push pins/clips for them that are a good match to the originals.

MainelyWheelhorse 1,875 #24608 Posted September 26 Since we're catching up on the rain here we didn't get this summer. I made a list of the stuff to be done on the Black hood and the C-141 once I pay my taxes at the end of the month.

Blue Chips 104 #24610 Posted September 26 (edited) Painted the rear body/fender of my GT18 today with three coats of New Holland-approved paint. I used up almost three rattle cans on this body part. In hindsight, I should have just ordered a quart or two of paint and used an HVLP spray gun for this project, but it came out OK...no runs and pretty shiny. What looks like wrinkles in the paint is just the masking tape on the data labels. The GT18 came with rear-facing reflectors, which are essentially taillight lenses with a piece of white (now yellow with age) plastic behind them. Here are the original reflectors (which are still in pretty good shape): I thought I'd upgrade the GT18 by replacing the reflectors with "real" taillights, like those on my 522xi. I did a bit of searching and found a set (see part number in photo): I just ordered a set of lamp sockets for the new taillights, and I plan to add the taillight wiring when I have a moment. The taillights will come on when the headlights are on. The total current for the headlights and taillights together should be less than the original headlights alone, since I've switched to LED bulbs for the headlights. MainelyWheelhorse 1,875 #24611 Posted Saturday at 01:41 AM Today I got the group out in the sun for Front End Friday. I worked some on the C-141 rerouting the gas line to make it start easier, which was a success. I also worked more on the C-85 getting it to the point where its easier to move around. I also started a bit of disassembly on the shaker motor mount as I'm going to set it up like the others. I also removed the PO added external idle handle. 2

MainelyWheelhorse 1,875 #24615 Posted Sunday at 03:19 AM I wasn’t happy with the way the paint job on the C-141 came out so I figured I’d fix it. It’s supposed to be nice the next few days so I figured I’d give it another shot before it gets cold. That might be a tomorrow morning or Monday project. It’s a learning curve….right😁 8

peter lena 9,373 #24617 Posted Sunday at 12:52 PM @ebinmaine @Blue Chips , good job on the oiling , personally think the hot sun bake in , is the finish you want , my decks are stained black , with oil bake in , never really did more than a thorough cleaning , of deck bottom , before 2 stage , penetrant , open gear oil set up . did the lighter oil first , sun just abot evaporated it , deck hot , then over spray ,gear oil , to same baking effect . amazing durability , have to break the " GRUNGE CYCLE " with oiled heat base . of course , experimenting with a repetitive problem, IS WHAT YOU WANT ! ground zero , did a lot of " what if,s " on refitting , you know what fails , very often just a DETAILING TO FUNCTION , is what makes it bombproof / easier function. very simple / easy trial spot , EXPERIMENT , is PTO LEVER START AREA , SIDE OF BATTERY TRAY , simple / easy . this converted me , pete

Good luck to us both! @kpinnc I think I’ve redone mine 4 or 5 times now due to outside variables like excessive trash in the paint, the difference between a spray gun paint, and spray can, or bad bondo. The surface was significantly pitted as well. I learn something new every time though. Good luck on your paint job top too.
c-series don 10,317 #24619 Posted Sunday at 11:32 PM I took out some tractors I had stored in my enclosed trailer to put different ones in to go to a show yesterday. When I got home I didn’t feel like reloading them so I just put them in the garage. 1
MainelyWheelhorse 1,875 #24620 Posted Monday at 10:51 PM All painted……for now. It’s a worker but it seems to be better than the last paint job so far.. Bar Nuthin 1,236 #24622 Posted Tuesday at 01:11 AM Decided to tackle this non-running C-141A I bought Friday. Looks like the original owner had starting issues and took the wrong turn at every step along the way. They even went so far as to direct wire a push-button start (with 12 gauge wire)! So, I basically cut away a half mile of unnecessary wiring, rerouted the remaining wires where they belonged. Also swapped out an incorrect coil, solenoid, condenser, and fried points. Set the points timing, fuel looked and smelled fresh, so I just replaced with a proper filter. Oil in engine and hydro looked new, Hit key - started! Aired tires, drove tractor, tested hydraulic lift, attached deck, and mowed several strips in the empty park behind our property. Outstanding day 1 results! 1 7

Once the decals go on we’ll see what it looks like. It’s still a pretty big blank canvas.

It’s supposed to be high 60’s and low 70’s the next week and a half here. The nights are in the 40’s too. Hopefully it’s plenty of time for the implement paint to set up fully or close to it.
