In other news, the 516, newly rebuilt, must have gotten something in its main. It mowed the yard over the weekend but only on partial choke and hunted like crazy without it. No idle. Of course, the main isn't the easiest thing to get to so I took advantage of the disassembly and checked the front head torque. Remember that I blew both head gaskets after the decarbon because my 59 year old brain likely didn't finish the torque process. Well, all the bolts needed a minor tweak so the rear head will get the same treatment if I can get it done without removing the engine. I love this Onan but it's a chore. Heated it up and ran the deck - perfect. Adjusted the idle and buttoned her up. Spent extra time to blow the blasted pollen off the rest of the engine. This is Georgia after all.

My dad‘s 78C 161 with the twin Briggs is our most dependable and reliable horse that we have. It’s never been touched and it sat in his basement for eight years before I brought it out and gave it a minor tuneup and it roared back to life just like it did the last time he used it before he passed. The power and sound are only matched by the Onans.

I plugged two big holes in the rear tires and tried to tighten up the hydraulic hoses to staunch the ooze. Hopefully it helped. 
 

Shopping for new rear ags. The existing set is a mess with dry rot. Favorite vendors?

for general chores, my Deestone 23x10.50’s have been pretty amazing.  They don’t tear up much grass but will plow a field quite well!

Deestone certainly makes a good looking tire but they are well known to be VERY undersized. 

Might have been @Gregor that recently had comparison pics. 

 

BBT and I buy ALL our tires online.  Frugality dictates the source. 

I've been using Carlisle AGs for years at work. HIGHLY recommend them. 

My next set of AGs is most likely going to be what @WVHillbilly520H has been recommending. OTR...(?)

I really like the tread design. 

 

We have a manual tire changer. Excellent investment. MUST be mounted right for stability reasons. 

I've been putting tubes in every new installation. 

 

 

If you don't already have someone in mind to install the new tires make a proactive phone call to a few places. 

Some will not install anything they didn't sell. Pricing may vary widely as well.

That front axle beam surely is a keeper along with the tie rods since the other stuff was in such good shape.  Wonder why that machine got parted out in the first place?  Seems to have had low hours on it judging by no wear on the spindles!

Kinda slow going at this point on the deck rebuild.  Got my new rollers from K & B (thanks Brian!) but still waiting on the new idler which I SHOULD HAVE ordered from Brian also, but for some reason did not (sorry Brian!) ...

 

This is a 'worker' deck so I'm not too concerned about the paint job quality which shows in this pic, but it really looks WAY WAY better than it did.  I should have used some sandpaper, I know...

 

 

The rear roller shaft is done, my welding skills are improving a little at a time, still not 'great' but not 'awful' either!

 

 

 

Have a few more things to wire brush and paint then on to reassembly.

I don’t know, but I got it last year of CL with a 701 engine bolted to it, sitting outside.  The trans was used for “Poppy” and the engine was traded to Uncle Jim for Rylee’s “Fat Bob”

I just cannot love this enough.  Not only are you teaching her valuable skills as a mechanic, you are giving her confidence to tackle anything in life and empowering her to shirk those societal limitations girls and women often face.  I admire you for doing this, and it will serve her well.  Good papa!

You’d get along with Mrs. Pullstart I’m sure @krystolo!  She’s a third generation circle track driver, there’s not much she can’t do that I can.  She even taught me to shoot bow and hunt!  Having only daughters, I often times am asked if I’ll try for a boy or if I wish I had one.  I’m 100% satisfied with my girls!
