Did  you wipe down with denatured alcohol to remove any residual hand oils or anything?

Nope, no alcohol... just a clean, lent free cloth...fabric softener, or detergent residue maybe ???

I would have... but I doubt that is the cause.

What was the temperature when you painted?

Why did my spray paint crackle?
The most common culprits why spray paint crackles are temperature, when it is too hot or too cold, or applying too much paint in one go. When you apply spray paint in conditions too hot, the solvent in the paint evaporates, causing the paint to shrivel up and crack.

Why did my Rustoleum paint wrinkling?
The most common – is applying the paint too thickly – which makes the surface of the paint dry too fast and not the underside.

Another problem with aerosol products/ spray can paint is that it never truly dries. It can be re-activated hours, days, weeks, even years after application, 'cuz there is no hardener in it. If you can wipe your existing paint(no matter how old) with a lacquer thinner soaked rag and you get color on your rag, all bets are off.

Always always always clean the surface with a solvent.

Always.

The Paint Department here (Trina) uses almost exclusively Rust-Oleum 2X paint and cleans the surface with acetone.

Always.

Hood not sitting in sun...do you know whether the original paint was lacquer or enamel ?

Should have been some variant of enamel.

6 out of 8 holes line up :(

IMG-6927.jpg

will have to enlarge these two right ones to make it work. Nothing is bent that I can tell

Hole issue is no big deal, just give it a push over and the holes should line up good enough.

The bracket underneath is a big U shape so it moves pretty easy.

Thanks @ebinmaine...I know what you are saying...

I usually do clean it with something...not gas:lol:...but I have to say, why would it do it in just a few areas ??

And I' ve had weird things happen before with cleaning meticulously, and just air blow and wiping...

One thing fur sure...I ain't whomped yet !

It's entirely possible that all the areas were clean or adhered better.

It's also possible (even likely) that you had a better spray angle in the rest of the areas.

Mine on my 520H were sorta like that...

I used a scratch awl to align one hole, then started the bolt in the other...didn't have to enlarge the holes...

You should be able to flex the brackets far enough to line up the holes.

Posted before seeing others said it first, sorry!

If you have a gravel drive use roller chains. Works wonders.

I put about 85 to 90 lbs on Trina's 867 Pigpen's front end this year. Works just about right.

So before I put on my new decals from @Vinylguy I decided to paint my hood and seat pan Rustoleum Regal Red...

The under side of the hood turned out great, but I got some "cracking" on the outside of the hood.

Can someone take a look at these pics and tell me what may have caused it ?

I want to avoid it happening on the seat pan if I can.

Thanks,  Tim (Horse Newbie)

Enamels have a critical time window where the second coat will wrinkle the first.  That window moves a bit with temperature.  Looks like you unfortunately just found one of the boundaries of that window.  Enamel dries in two stages, first is just solvent evaporation and the second is the paint is combining with oxygen and curing.  Second coat must be applied either before the curing starts or well afterwards, again dependant on the temp and even somewhat on the humidity.  Label should offer some guidelines.

Probably the best fix is to solvent wipe it off immediately and start over.  But you can try to let it dry for as long as you can stand it, a few days in hot weather, WAY longer, a month in cool weather, and sand it smooth and test an area.  Catalyzed/2 part enamels will setup much, much sooner and be much more stable.

Good luck.

You need to allow the paint to cure a couple of weeks before putting decals on. the paint off-gassing will cause it to lift if it is covered too soon.

When I saw the bottom of the hood wrinkled, I thought possibly blow by hazing front the engine vent cover or the carb.  I have a couple of hoods that stay moist in that area for one reason or another.

I'd be more prone to recommend at least 4 to 6 weeks.

We normally wait 8 to 10 weeks to put decals on after using a spray can paint

Should have been OK.

I suspect that the application in those areas may have been heavier.

The areas that show 'orange peel' but not 'wrinkled' could be an indication that the can was too close to the work, the propellant can 'blow' the surface like that when too close.

Did you prime the hood before top coating?  If so, with what?

Installed the new seat on the 417H.    Then took a 3 hour test ride pulling the rake and sweeper.   It smooths out the bumps and feels secure on the side hill.
