Newbie questions

I'm thinking of picking up a WH or two for snow removal.  

 

This C-161 is local to me. 

 

 

Is there anything in particular I should check for if I go to check it out?

A 161 is great tractor and a beast. Real favorite of many here and on my bucket list as well. Seller is right about the price of the tires. Those look to be Tru-powers on the rear and if they 23-10.5 are a buck & a quarter+ each . Looks to be in decent shape but check the transmission for strongness. Ask the seller if he'll run up to a tree and see if the tires spin. Check the fluids for off color or smell. Check for how well it's been taken care of but looks good that way from here.  I am not a fan of tri-ribs for moving snow but dirt... you bet! That tractor would move piles of gravel all day without missing a beat.  I would be all over that tractor for that price if things checked out!

Does the hydro need to be HOT for this test, or just a few minutes of run time?

I was looking at that one and drooling too, just too far away for me.

The engine and transaxle should be warmed up a couple of minutes prior to attempting to push down a tree. Be sure to do this in both directions.

Looks like a great tractor to me, I had one a few years back with a loader and it was very strong. If you get it, you will love it. It looks to me like the tires are worth almost the asking price.

I assume attachments are readily available for either. 

- 40 year old iron vs ~20? year old?

- Is there a significant advantage for one over the other wrt. parts availability?

- Hydro vs gear drive in terms of durability vs practicality?

- both 14 vs 16 hp sufficient  (assuming snow blowing application)?

 

I don't think I've seen studded ag tires before.   They kind of look like sheet metal screws in the photo.

 

 

There are also a few 520H's at ~$1500 and within day-trip diving distance.

 

Assume the CFO is only going to approve one GT.

Not really, I personally think the 40 yo tractors are easier to work on and sometimes better built.

Again not really, there are parts available here on RS from other members/vendors  and of course the popular auction sites. Parts are available from Toro dealers yet as well but they can be quite proud of them $$ wise. Parts for the Kohler K series motors are aplenty in both affordable aftermarket & OEM versions. Any tractor with an Onan not so much so.

Quick rule of thumb gear drive for anything ground engaging, hydros for blowing, mowing & lighter pushing but many of the guys here have an FEL on a hydro with no issues.

 Depends on what type of blower you are running, a deuce (2 stage) will require 16 + HP  Generally 12 hp and a single stage will get the job done. There are some gents here tho that proudly  blow/push snow with a vintage round hound or  mid sixties tractors with a 6 - 8 HP!

I just got that tractor's ad in my morning Wheel Horse blast from ...something like 13 people watching it  You best go get it before I talk one of the CT boys to go get it for me....or they go get it for themselves!
