carburator problem, i think.

my wheel horse is a 1980 model c-145 with a 14 hp kohler engine. it is an automatic. it runs fine on the flat areas.  when I go up a fairly steep hill the engine spits and sputters and blows black smoke out the exaust and it will shut down.  it will restart immediately. replaced fuel pump, gas lines, shut off valve, fuel filter, and spark plug.  I cannot figure this one out.  any help would be greatly helpful. thanks and  Semper-Fi.

As long as you have a good steady flow of fuel from the pump, I would remove the carburetor and completely clean it. Replace the float valve.

Black smoke is gas (I think) so my guess is it's flooding. Might be something up with the float and/or the valve?
