This morning I picked up a 855. Seller said it's been sitting for a while.  I charged the battery up. Turn the key the engine seems to run. Slow though.  I was actually able to get it in gear and it kinda creeps along. I have a feeling it's something with the car or fuel pump? I'm a newbie here and would love some help. Thanks in advance.

:WRS:          855 is a great :wh:, my first was a 1055, same tractor but 10 HP. Since it has been sitting for a while you will want to get a kit for the carburetor and clean it up and clean up the points and plug for starters.

In addition to new plugs, points etc. make sure you run fresh gas - from your post it sounds like it was sitting a while...

Where is a good place to buy parts for the Kohler K181S engine? I just want to do a tune up on it to try and get it running properly at this point.

NAPA has a full line of Kohler parts, also Tractor Supply caries tune up parts.

So I'm starting to get into the tune up of this K181s Engine. This is a Carter Model N #22. I know there are "rebuild kits" for these carbs but I'm a bit concerned, so far the choke plate is stiff as a board and when I took off the float bowl this is what I've found. Thoughts?

I was surprised as well. I bought this tractor on Saturday morning so I can't be blamed for this mess. So.....where do I go from here?

I have had good results with soaking gunked up carburetors using lacquer thinner or acetone. A bit of PB Blaster will probably free up the choke. :twocents-02cents: If it won't clean up then @woodchuckfarmer's suggestion would be plan B.

+ 1, ... a rebuild kit is about 12 bucks, and that's assuming that`s all it needs. For about another $40 you can have a new carb....

wow that's really gunked up,i know some guys use berrymans carb cleaner and soak for a day or 2,but that carb is really bad,so its a flip of the coin,new carb or spend near that on cleaners and rebuild kits

      Added THREE tractors all at once yesterday(09/16/2025).  Two model 854, and one model 855.  The two 854 look pretty nice, but are not running right this minute  --does not look like much more than a little tinkering/refreshing after sitting for a long time.  The 855 was labelled a "parts" tractor, but except for it being Really well-used looking, it seems to be all there so I am not going to consider it out of play yet.  The two 854's have rear discharge mower  decks...one is a square style deck, the other the rounded style deck.
       
      I think it is really nice that all three are basically the same machine, separated by one year, yet completely different styles--the end of one era and the beginning of another I guess.
       
      There is an ID tag on the 855 (serial number 135166) but on the two 854 tractors, there is No tag under the steering like late models.  Are the tags in a different place on older machines?  Looking them over, I do not notice anything obvious.  The 854 with the lower Kohler engine serial number has the round style mover deck, while the one with the slightly higher engine serial number has the square style deck.

      Throttle change, up/down hills?

      I've noticed that while driving any sort of elevation change, whether it's up a hill or down I start losing throttle. What type of fuel delivery issues could I be having? Occasionally it will even die out almost completely. Sometime if I mess with the throttle I can get it back on track but seems like i shouldn't have to fuss with it that much? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance
