C-161 Leaking Gas Tank - Need info

I bought a C-161 last year which I knew would need body off restoration.

 

I did not get the priority job of remodeling the wifes kitchen done in time to tackle before we got to grass season.

 

It runs well now that I have replaced starter...and flywheel (don't ask why on the flywheel :banghead:  ) and I had hoped to use it to mow this summer and resto it over winter.

 

But It has a gas leak. I fixed one leak which I had hoped was the only leak by replacing the grommet.

 

This bigger leak is on bottom. There are two indentations. Might have been slightly threaded a long time ago to hold it in place.

 

Question is....Do any of you know what type of plastic are these made of?

 

Will the epoxy glues at auto parts box stores adhere to it?

 

Suggestions?

Many have tried to repair.  Start looking for another tank. :banghead:

The under the seat tanks are plentiful in the used market. Don't waste your time trying to repair it...replace it.

Check with the vendors here on RS, they will hook you up.

hmm, I will need to ask my brother Al what he used on my tank. I have a 1983? C-195 (I am only guessing it has the same/similar type of plastic fuel tank??) and on the right side bottom it somehow must have had something rub against it a little and it started leaking. Seem to remember it was hard to get something to stick but eventually something did and so far it has lasted many years.

The tanks are PE "polyethylene" easy to fix.

 

Black to block UV rays, destroys PE (polyethylene).

 

Clean the tank, just to make it look nice!

 

Now, listen up. Use a soldering gun gently smoothing, melting the PE (polyethylene). Called "plastic welding." Done every day.  :)

 

Most hardware suppliers sell polyethylene welding rod and, get this, plastic welders.

I've repaired week wackers, chain saws, blowers. Lots of plastic, UV cracked or just stressed out.

Really bad holes can be patched with a piece of PE (polyethylene) welded on, like a tire patch.

Repairing the tank would be a cool exercise. However, I had a tank on a Wheelhorse that had about 10 years of varnish and gum. I tried everything everything I knew to clean it out. In the end, I found a replacement tank - cheap and easy to install.

Tankman is correct. I have done this too. I have even repaired several car batteries back in the 80's. They were made out of this same type plastic. I would cut a plastic milk jug into strips and melt them into the crack in the battery plastic. It never failed, they would hold battery plastic and never leak a drop. The kind of soldering iron I used was one of those big old school type soldering irons

      Can I pick some brains please? It's just a thought at this stage but I'm wondering whether I could upgrade my C161 so I can get rid of my old Ferguson TEF tractor and topper to save on space and tidy up my outdoor area a bit. The trouble is I need to regularly cut a 2 acre paddock so want to be able to tow a decent finishing mower like a 4ft Wessex or something similar. Has anyone tried fitting a mechanical PTO to an old machine like this or will I have to stick to a self-powered tow-behind mower for the rough work? I could investigate putting in a more powerful engine if I can find one. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks in advance

      C-161 electrical issues - Starting

      Hello, Have a C-161 Manual transmission Kohler engine.
      I had been mowing a good bit and thought I would wash grass and dirt off it.  Well apparently got something wet and now may have shorted something out. After drying out, something is still wrong it tried to start a couple of time, but now nothing, unless I use two jumpers from the switch connector (and I even replaced switch and still have issue).  It will start and run and lights will work etc. except with way I have it jumper-ed it won't shut off unless you disconnect the 1st jumper.
      To start and keep it running, use two jumper wires from the switch connector (five blade).  1st. jumper wire from the black wire to the positive on the battery and 2nd jumper wire from red wire to positive on the battery to engage the starter to start it.  hope that makes sense, see pictures  (Note - the amp meter was showing charging even though switch off and even disconnected, so to rule the amp meter I by passed it.).  Did the the one relay block get too wet and short out?   Other side note,  have had some issues with mice and even had a black snake in it this morning, guess it was looking for food.  Do not see any wires chewed, and it was running fine until hosed off dirt and grass clippings.

      ‘79 C-161 - Parts?

      I’ve decided to start this thread to keep this info together.  It’s about this C-161 I have.

      It showed up at my house one day around mid-2021 as a “parts” tractor.
       
      I had no idea this was going to be left at my door, abandoned, tired, unwanted.  I can’t remember a lot of what I was being told about it as I was staring at it wondering why I was chosen, apparently, as the one who was to strip it of it’s organs and transplant them into some other “being”.
       
      By the time those who brought it left, even though I never said it until just now, I knew I was going to attempt to resuscitate her.
       
      No longer an “it” she was certainly worthy of a shot at another life.  16 HP Kohler, Sunstrand Hydro and hydraulic lift!  I had already fallen in love with the C-100 I grew up with that I later inherited, but this girl had something extra, something different about her that I thought was …
      appealing.

      Parts tractor?  Not if I can $@%# help it!
       

       
      She was glistening.  Maybe it had something to do with the rain that day on the ride over.  But she IS glistening!

      Well fellas since I had to sell off my Wheel Horses I felt like I didnt belong anymore. The Lambert and the Speedanza are cool but THIS IS a Wheel Horse Fourm. Well guess what....... Im back in ! Picked this up a little while ago. Saw it on CL and jumped right on it. Not a model I know anything about but it does say Wheel Horse on the side of it ! I am so excited to have it and the best part is that it runs and drives!!! It does need some work... I think the hydro is leaking as a saw a puddle of oil on top of the deck. Checked the dip stick and was hardly any in there. When you raise the deck it seems to come up higher on one side then the other. Seat is horrible, someone glued vinyl on it. Front head light lens busted, rear one is busted and no lights work. came with wheel weights for the rear but nothing else. Still trying to figure it out. I just got it home and off the truck. As usual any info I would love to hear about it. I dont know the year, I believe thats a 16 hp Kohler, not sure but it runs really good. Not a fan of driving it by a stick, seems like something you have to get used to then maybe like. Right now it just seems funny but I only did a little lap in my yard. I think I got a smoking good deal on it that makes me even happier.
