kudzu3 323 #1 Posted June 15, 2014 I am almost at the wiring stage in my restoration and know exactly nothing about what I am doing. Do I need a wiring harness, if so, where do I get it? Does the wiring harness include everything I need? I am completely ignorant on this, so any help will be very much appreciated . Pictures, diagrams, anything. I do have the service manual wiring diagram but don't know much about figuring it out. I will also need a switch, amp gage and such. Thank y'all! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
r356c 375 #2 Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) Hi kudzu3, Do you have a link to the service manual wiring diagram that you are using? A common frame of reference would be good. My B-80 seems to have the original wiring with not too many suspicious splices in the wiring from repairs. First up to get the engine running, do you understand the theory of a points-sparkplug-coil-condenser engine ignition system? Sorry to ask but when someone says they don't know electrical systems, sometimes they know more than they think they do. The other question is, are you going for an all original components restoration or a running restoration with newer electrical parts if need be? Edit: This is a good video for the ignition system. We have one cylinder so no distributor on the B-80. Otherwise all the components are the same. Edit 2: I found this I see what you mean. It is, how do I say this nicely, creative! I'll be happy to work with you on this using my B-80 as a reference and your preference of original or generic parts. I am in a full restoration and would like to put it back as close to original as possible. When I got it, it seemed to have wires of all colors running everywhere and obviously almost nothing was original. I do intend to use any components that can be salvaged. r356c 375 #4 Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) Would it start, run and charge the battery before the restoration began? Mine has different colored wires sort of strung around every where too. Most look like they are for the safety interlocks. They are not needed to get the engine running for some motivation to keep going on the project. Of course OSHA and who knows who else would have a cat if I didn't say they should be always be functional at all times. The wiring diagrams are available in the manuals section of this forum. I have a NOS wiring harness for a B-100. It should be the same. PM me if you are interested. Hi maynard, it is a '74 B 80. Is the wiring harness for these things a one piece thing that has all necessary wires enclosed or is it separate wires? If I get a wiring harness will I need any other wiring? Can someone get a pic of the wiring harness? Please forgive me for all the questions, but this is new ground for me. If two wires are the same size in diameter, a red one does exactly the same thing as a green one. The different colors are for helping identify what goes where during assembly and repair, nothing else. Edit: That is good news that it ran and charged before. All of your major electrical components can be assumed to be good now. That will save a lot of time. Edit2: It might be easier for you to post pictures of what you have so everyone can say if your harness is original or not. Can someone tell me what ga wire should be used? Sorry, I don't have any pictures, all I have is a tractor with no wire on it anywhere, all the old wire went in the garbage. r356c 375 #11 Posted June 17, 2014 (edited) Nice work Martin! Kudzu3, that thread is better than any explanation I can give! In the months to come I will be revisiting it myself. This got me to pull my gas tank to take a better look. It was a good thing since a couple of wires were rubbing on the steering column where the shiny rings are.
