Welcome New Raider 12

Recommended Posts

mmmmmdonuts

Hello. Just received a new Raider 12 from my grandfather after I bought my first house. Already been using it to mow and move wood around. Trying to figure out what year the Raider is and what model it is because I can't seem to find that information anywhere.

Also, I am looking into possibly getting a snowblower for it, but I am not sure what I have to do for the front. It looks like he added custom attachments to it but I am not entirely sure nor is he. I am just looking for a little bit of guidance on maybe attaching a tach-o-matic or what I would need to get.

Trying to fix the tractor up a bit when I get time and make it look like new again hopefully in the future. Any suggestions and tips would be appreciated. Thanks for any help.

First, :WRS:  Just at a glance, your tractor appears to be a 68 or 69.  To find the model number, look under the dash, there should be a little aluminum tag riveted to the dash stand.  If not a tag, you should at least see two little holes where it was so you know it's missing.  Look closely.  Sometimes they've been painted over and you might not notice it!

Going to need some better overall pictures to see what's going on with that front hitch.  Definitely, "customized"... but for what is the real question!  Snow throwers are easily available, both the bolt on kind that would have been original to your Raider, and the later attach-a-matic ones... and yes, you just need to get or make an adapter for the newer models.  That was actually just covered the other day with another new member who has a Charger. (the hydro version of your tractor)  Follow the link and/or info in this topic

Welcome again, and by all means, ask questions and use the search button... there's a ton of information here, and many people who can/will point you in the right direction or give you guidance.

:eusa-think: Can we get a detail picture of the belt under the guard attached to the hood ?  Is that belt driving the mower deck ?

Oh, welcome to the Red Square !

            Like that heat shield.

Yes, what is under that cover on side of hood? I see a belt running up to it? Mower belt in center of pto, drive belt in inner pulley...., hmmmmm

Yes. I will take a lot more pictures tonight when I get home. If I remember correctly I believe it is an alternator under the guard hood, which is pretty crazy that I need to engage the PTO to charge the battery. I am still trying to dig through everything to figure out exactly what modifications were done and the electric is quite a bit of a mess at the moment as well.

Also the way it works currently is the PTO engages when I shift towards the tractor. (Sitting on the tractor right to left) Not sure if that is correct either.

Yes, the PTO engages when the rod is moved toward the tractor.

A PTO driven alternator  :eusa-think:  :eusa-think:  :eusa-think:  interesting.

Okay, here are some more pictures. I found the model as well. It is a 1-6231 so a 1968 Raider 12. I did my best to get the pictures as best as I could. Here are the additional pictures:

Thanks for the pics.  Looks like your Grandfather was a self made Electrical/Mechanical Engineer that did whatever was required to keep the Horse working. :)

You can mount a Tach-a-Matic or frame mount blower.  I have both and they work equally well. The T-a-M is a little easier to lift as the lift pivot point is closer to the blower. This is not a problem for me as I add enough lift assist springs to balance the weight of the blowers.

To mount the frame mount blower, you should only have to remove your existing custom front mount and bolt the blower to the existing holes in the frame rails.

Here's a pic of my frame mount blower on my C-120.

Well, it's been one year with the Raider 12 down and another mowing season finished. This tractor is a workhorse, between hauling wood, mowing, and towing trailers around the yard it has handled everything I have thrown at it. I found out that the alternator on the raider is an old GM car alternator from the 1970's. Needless to say the battery charges the battery in a jiff.

I got a new addition in May for the Raider and here it is below:

A new 6-9112 snowblower. (At least new to me) I got my chains ready and am contemplating getting some wheel weights for the winter months. Got it for less than $100 and everything seems to work minus the chute control. (cable broke) I went and bought some weed wacker cable for it and I should hopefully be good to go for the winter.

Thanks for the welcome. I have been lurking on topics around the forums for the past year. Just trying to learn and absorb as much information as possible and put that information to use on the Raider and make the machine last as long as possible.

Yep. If you need any help I know a fair bit of raiders. Especially the 12s. Need any help there are plenty of people on this form and I can help you too.

My cheap-o walmart U1 battery is starting to bite the dust again (barely able to crank it over fully charged, and ozzing everywhere) after 3 years on my 68' Raider and I am looking into a new battery for winter as I now have a plow setup. I was thinking of either getting the original 22NF battery that came with it or running a mazda mita battery which is a U1 size. Is the AGM worth the extra money over the 22nF even in the smaller size? I think the vibrations keep killing the cheapo batteries and I am trying to make sure I can leave it out in the cold and not have a problem starting in the winter. It does get down to 0F or below zero every once in a while. I don't think I want to go all the way to a 22nF AGM as it is $200.

      Thoughts?

I am picking away at the k series on the raider10. Basically the Piston blew through at the ring grooves as it appears the rings may have had too large a gap. I can feel a slight erosion of the bore where the ring gaps All lined up, but not even close to catching a finger nail.
I am hoping just hoping out the bore will get it back to round close enough that a ring job will do .
In any case I can measure the bore and report back. Discipline demands that I do not tear this engine down right now as too many things are taking up my time.
Just hoping the gurus can offer a bit of guidance

Just recently had a 10 pinion differential axle gears lose their teeth as shown in this picture from a post in 2014.
Was wondering if others have had this happen and if they determined the root cause and corrective actions.
I am considering replacing the two axle gears and five pinions that were destroyed but did not want the same thing to happen again.
I assume the failure was due to a worn cylindrical spring that I also plan to replace.

Been looking at a lot or Raiders and Chargers lately and was wondering if they all have LSD? I know most of them did but I was wondering if some of the later models might have had the Uni drives instead ?

      Thanks, Robbie.
