steering gear

I want to tighten up the steering on my tractor. I think it might be the gears? Without being able to see it do you guys know what I might need or have what I might need? Thanks a bunch,

Usually you can fix this with a couple of well placed 3/4"shim washers. Push the steering shafts together at the sector gear and hold them there while trying to turn the wheel if the slop gets better or goes away then that is the problem. Also check for worn bushings on both ends of both shafts. If this is a 300 or 400 series tractor the upper end of the steering column tends to wear out because it is sheet metal. There are several threads on different ways to fix that problem.

Its a 753 so I'm not sure what that would be? I know if someone gets on these little tractors or wants to push them out of the way it seems like they always go for the steering wheel or tank for a handle. That CANT be good?

That's one thing that really worries me. (I'm too paranoid sometimes.) I'm very particular. A friend came by to look at my tractor and leaned on the tank to bend down to look at the motor. It made me cringe honestly..do you think that bent things? I can't really tell but like I said I'm meticulous.. thanks

These little tractors are built to take a licking and keep on ticking...I don't think your friend hurt anything.  Your horse is from 1963...like Sousa said...ti is probably just normal wear, and is fixable.

Thank yah sir! I worry..I know the tank is mounted to sheet metal on the 753s and it "flexed" when he did that. I m just a worrier and can't help it I reckon.

You know I have always said IF I ever got anything brand new I would put a ding it somewhere and a scratch in the paint so I wouldn't have to worry about the small stuff.

There was a service bulletin on tightening steering on round hoods. You replace roll pins with over size ones at the spindles and steering shaft. I did it to my 704 and it drives like new! Bulletin WH 61-90 #49

I think it is a good thing you are into Wheel Horses and not that green stuff or cubs...you could probably sit on that gas tank and be alright...

Java. I love them. And I'm very thankful for this sight full of people like you guys that are so knowledgeable. This is my first tractor. And I just turned 20 so I'm still learning a LOT. Stevasaurus, what kind of headlights are on your tractor? Also, where do I find service bulletins?

I am not sure what kind they are.  My dad had these horses and I found this site to get them running again.  I am sure they are from the 70's and I am not sure if I can find bulbs...much less those lights to replace them if I had to.    If you are looking at the 857 that I have...those still work and are great for moving snow at night in the winter.  My favorite time of year...you just can not beat plowing snow on a dark winter night after the snow has stopped.  It does not get any better then that.    Lights make it safe and more enjoyable...my kingdom for a Mars Light.

I agree with you one 100%!! Winter nights are my absolute favorite time to be out and riding tractors. Some of my buddies don't want winter to come but I'm the opposite. I'm glad I'm not alone. WINTER NIGHTS!!!!

My 854 had sloppy steering when I bought it.  Most of the play was in the steering shaft at the steering sector.  I had a welder weld the sector to the shaft and it will never loosen up again.

OK. Yes, my steering play seems to be mostly in the shaft.

I don't know that your machine is the same as mine, but I believe they are all similar enough that this might be helpful...

 

I had play in my 175 a few years ago and upon investigating I found that the cotter pin ( #18 in diagram ) was worn about halfway through.  This increased the endplay on the shaft with the steering sector on it.  Simply replacing the cotter pin did the trick on mine.  There is a brass bushing also ( #23 ) that if worn will cause excess play.
