Saving a 1076 (My first Horse)

Greetings;

I got a 1076 Wheel Horse tractor, mower deck, and snow blower for the perfect price. They are all three in pretty good shape, but have been stored outdoors without being run for maybe ten years. The tractor has the original 10hp Kohler engine. My plan is to put this pony and her attachments back into service. I don't need to make her pretty. I just want her strong and dependable again.

My first move was to buy a copy of the original owners/service manual. My next move will be to buy and install after market throttle and choke cables. After that, I'll refresh the fluids, grease and spark plug. Based on looking her over, I do expect she'll start right up.

At this point my first questions are as follows:

1.) The service manual shows a "speed control handle" on the right side, about even with the rear edge of the hood. The service manual also shows a "Cam control arm" (part no. 6123) on the right side. Neither of these levers appear to be present on this tractor. Did these represent optional features? Are these levers attached to the mower deck? (I haven't brought the deck home yet) This manual is also for the 1276 model. Could those levers have been for that model only?

2.) On the left side of the frame, near the front edge of the rear tire, there is a clutch brake. My first problem is that the manual doesn't identify that item for me. The clutch pedal does not link to that clutch brake, and doesn't look like it ever did, although it looks like maybe it should. How was that brake applied? It's a mystery to me.

What I need is a 1076 expert with photos of every possible angle of this tractor. If I can see pics of this tractor in fully operational condition, I can figure out what I need to correct. I'll be refurbishing this tractor out-of-pocket, and money is tight, so it's going to be a slow process but any help is appreciated.

As a side note, my current lawn machine is a 12hp Murray which is showing signs that it's time to retire (scrap) it. I want this Wheel Horse to become my replacement mower.

I have had a 1276 for about 3 years, its been a good solid old tractor for me.

The "Speed Control Handle" is just to tthe right of the dsahboard. It is your means of moving the tractor - to go forward you push it forward, to go back you pull it back. The further you move it, the faster you go.. You can see it in this pic of my tractor (with most of its clothes removed)

I dont have a parts list handy to check on the "Cam control Arm", but I am thinking that they are talking about the little lever down low on the right side that takes the tension off the belt when disengaged. Its hard to see it in the above picture.

Both of these levers are attached to the transmission.

The brakes on the hydro tractors arent really brakes at all. Pushing the brake pedal just returns the motion control arm to the neutral position, and thus the transmission does the braking.

So I am not sure what you are talking about when you say cluch/brake. - Maybe if all these parts are missing, someone has changed the Hydro to a manual transmission?

hey, welcome to redsquare.....

im sure it would help you if some of us posted pics,

but heres a better idea. post pics of as much of your tractor as possible showing concerns you have. im sure some of us will also see things that maybe arent right or you need to change. someone familiar with this model is going to see small things that you may over look. the model you have is similar to others from 1965-67,( and later too) and theres quite a few of us that have models from those years.....

Thanks for such speedy answers. You're helping already! I will post a set of pics of my 1076 some time this weekend. There are two shift levers between the operator's knees, the four speed gear shift and a Hi-Lo selector. The gear shift moves freely and pops into all four positions. The Hi-Lo selector moves freely but doesn't seem to pop into particular positions. Of course, that selector might be dependant upon having the tractor running. I see from the pic by sorekiwi that I have a manual power transfer clutch on the right side of the engine - it's that long lever which engages and disengages the clutch just behind the muffler. I'll have to look into that speed control arm. Mine is obviously missing :eusa-think:

sounds like it has been changed to mechanical 6/8 speed at some stage and no longer has the hydro transmission.

you have 2 scenarios here,

one i mentioned above, you have a 1076 that has had the hydro swapped out for a 6/8 speed( i say 6/8 speed because it could be either one or the other with the two levers)

or two, you dont have a 1076 at all. parts with the decals could have been swapped from a 1076 at some stage. do you have the id tag still riveted to the hoodstand. it would be just under the dash....

what model does it have on it? thats not set in stone either, because just about anything is interchangeable on these models and if it has been changed to mechanical trans then the hoodstand may have been changed too. thats why pics are a good thing, im sure some of us can set you straight.....

i think that maybe scenario 2 is more the case here, that would have been way less work......

Here are some numbers: On the dash stand plate: Model 1 03106, Serial: 772409. On the engine: Model: K 241 S, Serial: A 213730, Spec: 46333 D. The dash stand has numerous welds. The power transfer lever which goes to the clutch behind the muffler looks like a retrofit.

OK, with a quick search, that model # doesnt make sense, but looking at the pictures it would appear that you have either a 1076 that has been converted to a manual transmission (transmissions swap and hoodstand/console) or maybe its a 1056 with the 1076 hood fitted..

The engine spec is the correct one for both the 1056 and 1076.

Either way with what you have, you should look for information on a 1056. Disregard anything I said earlier about motion control levers etc - that only applies to the Hydro (Automatic) models.

The Manual for the 1057 is in the "Files" section here, it should be very similar to what you have. Also take a look at Martins thread on the rebuilding of his 1257, there is a lot of great information and pictures in that thread.

i may be going out on a limb here but i think you have a 1067.

the spec number for the engine would be the 46333d, and the decals on the console are for a six speed and are correct for a 1067.

i think that at sometime the hood was replaced with a 1076 hood.

as far as the id plate, give us a nice close up of it, really hard to see in the pics, sometimes they are hard to read or who knows it might have been changed at some time.....

I was talking to my auto mechanic today (a private operator) and I asked him if he'd be interested in putting my Horse back in service. He has the shop, equipment and knowledge to accomplish things that would be difficult for little ol' me. He expressed some interest and then he says "come look at this". Come to find out he has a beastly looking 16hp Wheel Horse in his back shed. He picked it up for $100. It looks great, and the engine is just busting out of it all over the place! It looks like a mid 80's vintage. He says he discovered that the rear tires are a different diameter from each other, and he thinks that difference was throwing the hydrostatic drive into a tizzy, which might be why he got it so cheap. I didn't catch the name of the engine manufacturer, but like I said, this pony looked like a real beast.

You have a very nice original 1267, even the steering wheel appears to be in great shape. Those 2 spook Steering wheels are hard to find in good shape. All it needs is the right hood/decals and a belt guard and you could show it the way it sits.
