Best Place to Get New Piston & Rod?

Recommended Posts

Zeek

My 12HP K301 is at a friend's shop getting a refresher kit installed. By that I mean this http://www.ebay.com/itm/ENGINE-REFRESH-KIT-for-KOHLER-K181-K241-K301-K321-/120962716479?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c29f0933f as well as getting the valves cleaned and the seats redone and a carb kit.

The guy said the piston and rod should probably be replaced.

Piston - he said there is scoring around the edges that became evident when the carbon was removed (ie - may have run a little dry at one point)

Rod - said that although it is still within specs, some of the aluminum has been worn off, which from what he says I believe would be where it rotates on the crank.

The guy is not charging me to do it since I know him, so it's not an up-sell issue. He says if I elect not to replace, it will run fine and not smoke, but he wouldn't recommend it since it's already apart as far as it is.

  1. Where is the best place to get a new piston and rod?
  2. Should I be concerned enough to replace them?

This is a trailer queen, so it doesn't need to be Kohler, Stens is fine.

The scoring on the edge of the piston is probably adjacent to the spark plug. It is from pre-ignition (timing slightly off), and is not a problem. However, I might have a little concern about some of the aluminum being worn off the rod.

Having said that, if everything is still within specs, I don't know that I would replace anything. However, if you decide to replace, I get my pistons, rings and rods from Maple Grove Distributors. If you want to place an order, I have an account and can get them for you. They will probably by less expensive than Stens, and quite a bit less than Kohler.

Prices are based on size. STD, .010, .020, and .030 over for pistons, STD, .010, and .020 under for rods. Pistons come with rings.

I have a WH 300 series with a Kohler Magnum 10 engine and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the choke cable and linkage set so it will work. The numbers on the engine label  are worn off the, so I cannot give anyone that information. Does anyone have a picture or can you head me in the right direction.

My arm for the linkage assembly is set at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock if that helps. There seems to be several different linkage rods for this engine.

      Thanks

      Hey all!

Replacing the drive belt on my 252-h. Anyone know the torque specification for the center screw when I put this pto clutch back on? I know it was on there tight it took a minute for the impact to break it loose. Thanks!

Hey all. I have a Electro 12 with a factory belly blade. It runs* and drives. I had used it to grade my driveway the last 6 yrs. Having moved I'm looking at my options on storing it or selling it. Frankly I have no idea what it is worth. I watched "ISaveTractors" video on 5 things to do with a new to you wheel horse/12hp kohler. (When i got it 6yrs ago) And went thru and did the adjustments and replaced the parts mentioned. It has been a good strong tractor for me until around July of this year. (2023)
*Around July it started dying after running 20-30min. I replaced the carb (Chinese Amazon purchase) with one from isavetractors web site. That seemed to help it idle smoother(the old carbs jets wouldnt adjust), but it still dies at around 20-30min.
      So I've got 2 questions.
      1. What is it worth? (As-Is) and
      2. What do I need to do to fix it?
      Thanks yall!
