Sorry no mirror shot but this just came home with me.

314H and a 42" SD deck.

Almost complete, just missing the carb so I can't start it yet.

the air cleaner assembly did come with it.

I had to go get it since it was close and it was priced at $250 CDN.

Deck seems OK and all spindles and the idlers spin freely.

Easiest way to move the 314.

Well, the hour meter says 7.7 but I somehow doubt that.

Tried my hand at wet sanding and polishing on the hood.

Paint is still pinkish but at least it shines now.

Color bled from the sandpaper backing. Not all sandpaper is usable wet. 😬

Ha Ha;

They are temporary, don't worry.

But they hold air so rolling the tractor is easier.

I need a carb and the choke linkage rod for it.

I may have to just get a Chinese carb and make a linkage out of wire.

Ideally I would find a blown M14 and get parts from that.

I guess I could at least do a compression test and see how the engine is.

Well, i got 60 PSI compression test.

Not sure if this engine has a compression release or not.

It should have a compression release, but that does seem a bit low.  Any chance the muffler is clogged?  It could be affecting your reading.

@ebinmainemay have a carb.

That about what I’ve gotten on engines with a compression release b

You can use another tractor and belt to the PTO. You can turn the engine backwards and it defeats the compression release

I ordered a cheap Chinese carb and will see how and if it runs with that.

Well the Chinese carb. came in.

It came with the proper choke shaft so I installed that and loctited the screws in.

Installed the carb and made up the choke linkage rod from a piece of wire copying the bends from my 312.

Set high and low needles to 2-1/2 turns out as per manual.

I need to manually apply power to the solenoid as the wiring on this machine is still messed up.

Turned on key, pushed button on my starter switch and after a few rotations the tractor started right up and ran smooth.

Took it for a drive and everything seems to work well with no unusual noises.

Turned off key and engine shut down.

I bought this tractor as a parts machine but now I don't know.

Cleat, with a TON of respect for your skills, I think you were lucky. The Kohler manual does not necessarily apply to any non-OEM carb. Every one that I’ve handled used metric fine-threaded needle valves and (after I learned my lesson) the last two came with, and needed, four-ish turns out from gently closed. I now suggest counting and noting the “out of the box” turns to gently closed before doing any further cleaning or adjusting.

It's really tough to part out a good running, driving tractor.  It's probably just a bad safety switch that's keeping it from starting with the key.  I'd fix the wiring, use it a little, then put it on the list for your next restoration.

I know one problem is the ignition switch has at least one terminal corroded off (never saw that before)

But I will pull the harness out and go through it all.

Yes I got lucky.

That is just a preliminary setting to get it running.

I will fine tune it later after I run some fresh fuel through it.
