battery charger..NEW update

Recommended Posts

perry

anybody know anything about battery chargers ?. can they be fixed ?.

my old charger has given up on me  .

this is a 6v-12v-18v-24v charging system. the fan works good but when i turn on the charger part it will make a hum sound and dim the lights and then pop the garage wall breaker.

i am hoping for a miracle and praying this can be fixed. to go out and replace it will cost a buddle.

Perry,

It sounds like the windings in the transformer have shorted. If that's the case, buying a transformer might be as costly as buying a new charger.

You might try blowing all the dust out, looking it over closely for bare wires and crossing your fingers

Perry,

crossing your fingers

Jim

crossing my fingers, thats about it.

i only paid $20 for this back in 1989. and it looked old then. been a great charger for many years.

the one year we had -40 wind chills and the wifes old car would'nt start.

i hooked up the charger and put it on 24v and everything started humming in the car :WRS: . i quickly turned the key and fired up  .

That is what I was thinking....it looks very dirty.... Clean it out and check it over carefully.

Maybe mouse chewed something.

I agree, it does sound like the transformer windings have shorted. Check around for motor rewinding shops. They should be able to test it and can probably rewind it, or get you a replacement at a good price.

I figured it quit working 'cause the piece of Fruit Loops cereal fell out of place.

You'll probably be able to find a few of those fleet type chargers for sale, Perry.... seeing how so many trucking companies are closing their doors due to high fuel prices. :WRS: (NOT funny, but true.)
