workshop almost finished !!!! (my turn now)

Recommended Posts

meadowfield

I've been very quiet during the last few months despite acquiring 2 C-105's, 1 C-121 and a GT-14.

The reason is my workshop has been slowly deteriorating with a leaky roof, cracked floor and no insulation or heating (last winter it was between 9 and 15 deg F for 4 weeks).

Heres a shot of the old one !

garage2002.jpg

it could have been patched up, but we chose to start over... it's been over 4 months now and we are nearly there !

Here is the backside which was a 300 year old cottage until 1975 when it was demolished and a concrete pad laid on the top.

mining.jpg

I had a go at mining the old stone out during the summer !

Heres the building reduced to rubble...

basement.jpg

The plan was to re use the old stone and rubble to build the new workshop.

Here we are at ground level.

groundworkdone.jpg

note the 12x3 ft pit for working under things. Or a swimming pool for dwarves

and here we are making progress on the stonework

stairs1.jpg

I made all the hinges and metalwork - in order to maintain an authentic look. Our house is 400 years old with stone floors, simple doors and 3 ft thick walls!!!

hinge2.jpg

I made use of the e tank in reverse to 'age' the hinges... it makes a good job of rusting.

Heres the stonework almost finished.

frontnoscaffold.jpg

the floor going in !

concrete2.jpg

the outside being tidied up

flags2.jpg

the upstairs... the kids wanted a crib ! now they have one

plastered.jpg

the doors fitted

Img_6595.jpg

further rustic hardware - up until 50 years ago all hardware used square head nuts and bolts. Here was my attempt at replicating.

bolts.jpg

that crib came at a cost... hey kids, get painting :D

paint.jpg

and lastly....

I let one of the horses in for xmas to dry out

horsey.jpg

Still have electrics to finish and heaps of tidying. Then comes the benches and bringing all my junk back in.

More pictures to follow !

Well done, sir!

I'm a HUGE fan of old stone buildings, and those that have been rebuilt in the old style. Yours turned out very nice indeed, and I see it's even complete with a barn cat. I have to admit, your third photo scared me, but I kept reading and I'm all better now.

Enjoy your new shop, you've earned it. :handgestures-thumbup:

By the way, who's the "we" who did the stonework? You, friends, contractor?

Beautiful craftsmanship and attention to detail!! That pit you made in the floor are no longer allowed here, something about gasses sinking into them I think is the reason.

Ah yes the cat... Rosie ends up on a few pictures !

The we is, me on site manager, hinges, details and generally making sure stuff happens. Then a traditional builder who comes from up in the dales (an area north of me full of sheep, big hills, walls made from pebbles and some fantastic scenery - the limestone pavement on deathly hallows was nearby). Joiner was a local guy who copied some doors I have on my shed further up the garden.

Cheers

Looks great & the efforts you put into makeing the outside blend in with your 400 year old home!

I'm actually in awe that your house is that old, mine is 110 years old & can't imagine it will still be standing in another 290 years!

Holy Crap!! That is absolutely gorgeous. I love stone buildings... one of the things I love most about visiting Europe. We have a friend with a castle in northern Italy, I love the thick stone walls. Bums me out sometimes to know that the building I put up "to current code" has no chance of seeing a century, let alone the four your house has seen.

Awesome work. If you would be so kind to post a link to your blog, I would love to take a look.

That's a lot of stone. Beautiful work. Be careful with the pit. They're dangerous unless they're covered.
