Sparky-(Admin) 26,575 #1 Posted October 30 I know the WH isn’t a bulldozer (no I don’t) Just driving around looking at flowers (no I wasn’t) So there I was pushing railroad ties with my GT-1600 when it made a weird noise, moved forward another foot and then she went into “infinite neutral mode” . Towed her into the ER and the hubs are good, the trans drive pulley and keyway are good and of course the fluid is clean/full. Jack up and it makes some weird and horrible noises when it’s spun. And one time it actually locked up. Have a few (4 spares) transmissions here so it’ll get a new trans. Busted one is the original 1” axle unit with 4 pinions. I’ll install a trans with a 1-1/8” axles and 8 pinions. 1 1

I have owned this one for at least 15 years and it’s been worked hard! Never was used for easy leisurely mowing. Always towing and plowing snow dirt and stone (and today it was railroad ties). It does have the weaker of the 8 speeds so it’ll be getting an upgrade with the new trans. 3

Easton Rich 1,272 #5 Posted October 31 Never broke one, but I only have 1, 1" 4 pinion 8spd that doesn't get worked.

Bill D 3,177 #7 Posted October 31 While you have the transmission out, check the mounting plate for cracks. 3
ri702bill 13,242 #8 Posted October 31 My money is on the differential - as in one or more of the pinions decided enough is enough. You did not drop the plow first before all this? Very optomistic of you! 1

Actually was just running it on jackstands to see what the transmission would do and how it sounded (both were bad). Was hoping to find a sheared key on the drive pulley. It’s “plowless” now while it awaits surgery. 1

Gotta open her up just to entertain us, we all need a little tractor porn to start the day. We want to see Mike up to his elbows in gear oil and parts and pieces. 2

A much easier task when dealing with an early one pedal short frame tractor. To switch yours, you will fill a coffee can with fasteners & small parts - not counting the small trophy fiddely-bits inside the Unidrive...

Sparky-(Admin) 26,575 #17 Posted 1 hour ago Had a chance this morning to get back to this rig. Trans is out! Fuel line is old and showing cracks in the rubber so that’s also going to be replaced. Drive belt is new so that’s staying. The brake band was a new one from Bob @rmaynard and it’s still like new 6 or 7 years later Amazingly the tow hitch came right out!

I’m sure it was me pushing this 4 pinion- 1” axle unit harder than I should have. And I have been for years! Plus it’s over 40 years old so things happen. Blame is all on me, but I’ll go shopping for a new tranny and maybe have it all back together tomorrow ready to get back to work.
