B-80

So I'm down to two Black hoods after my A-60  started it's way to Wisconsin... And, well there's this B-80 pops up on MP for $50. Motor and trans are free, tires all have air, seat is to die for... so, Here's the obligatory pics and what I've done so far:

 

Carb dip - 3 times

New battery 

New battery cables 

Motor oil change (bad)

Trans oil change (really bad)

New fuel line and filter

Fresh rec gas

New air filter

Mouse house removal

 

She runs, but still getting some surging...

 

Still on the plate:

Dial in the carb / fix surge issue

Tires are tired...

Grease

Tie rods

Rewire lights

 

I'm sure something else will

pop up...

 

My C-125 is currently set up as a plow mule and back up snow machine. Not sure if this B-80 would be better suited to snow or mule duties...

Interesting assist torsion spring return thingy on the Clutch pedal - is there a heavy spring in the OE position too? (or was this a PO backyard "fix")

If that's it, there may not be enough force to keep the drivebelt tight enough...

I can't speak for the dirt plow dogs but B80 is a great snow plow rig.

Get you a 108035 and maybe even add some to that on the inside. I have a couple tractors with double springs.

yes it works, yes it's unique, not enough pressure so no it ain't staying... I have a bunch of trampoline springs I've used on previous projects - as @Pullstart knows...  it's on the list...

Thoughts on B-80 as plow mule vs the C-125?

 

I'm thinking new tires for B-80 due to extensive cracking and dry rot so ag / rib?

I'm curious on this too. Do folks run a lot of small block tractors? 

Of course I realize everything before the mid 1960s is small but is there a leaning preference towards more weight or more torque?

B-80 would make a fine plow mule with that 8" Brinly you have. I wouldn't even think twice about throwing a ten on. Heck maybe even a 12 just for a hold my beer and watch this. Guessing you would run out of traction before power in hard dirt. 

I had a no name eight that was a house mule and it did just fine.

Weight is traction.  Putt Putt has pulled plenty of 10” and 12” plows, and has a much smaller belt contact patch.  Just add weight.  And tires.  And more weight.

 

@Blasterdad shows up with a B-80 and plows all day.

Like Jim stated the B-80 would do fine with an 8" plow, might even pull a 10". You will be working the engine though.

 

In my opinion, you can feel the difference between a 10hp and a 12hp engine. Beyond a 12hp, I don't seem to be able feel a difference. I also know that a 12hp seems to be better on fuel than a 10hp is.

 

If I was to build another dedicated plow mule it would have at least a 12hp under the hood.

Fer sure although the 1054 isn't bad on fuel. I take her to WFOT and then just back it off a bit and running in 2nd. not a speed demon but gets the job done. 

@PeacemakerJack always said it all depends on the soil and conditions with small bore singles. That's why the MN boys run heavy weighted 16s. They are good to go for any soil type.

I have some thinking to do...

 

The C-125 did fine at @Pullstart's plow day this year (well, after some meatball fuse surgery) with turfs and chains... and it's rigged and ready... so I'm leaning toward keeping that as plow mule and setting up the B-80 as dedicated kid hauler and back up snow plow...
