The 953 and 1054 have 15" rear wheels and a hydraulic lift.

The 856 has 12" rear wheels and a manual lift.

Hydraulic lift comes from a separate pump called an HY-1 or HY-2. This is different from the later Sunstrand- or Eaton-powered lifts where the pump was integral to the transaxle.

Good question for @953 nut or @ri702bill

The Hy-xx series stand alone pumps are fairly simple - pump, directional valve, & reservoir all in one. If the pump, cylinder & lines are completely empty, it will require filling the reservoir a few times as the fluid makes it way thru the lines & cylinder when activated.

You NEED to determine just what fluid in in there - It could be oil, ATF, or a mineral based recirculating "oil".Try and use the same... others my sprcify one over the other. The HY-2 and HY-3 manual is of little help - it just provides a now obsolete WH part number for the fluid...

They are rugged tractors...but as I get older the fact that it weighs 192 lbs more than an 856 is becoming more and more an issue when it comes to working on them...
