 August 30, 1982, Howard Stern began his radio show in the New York market on WNBC, but the show gained national syndication and major prominence after he started broadcasting on New York's WXRK-FM on November 17, 1985, moving to mornings and syndicating the show in 1986. He was widely known as the quintessential "shock jock" due to his controversial and boundary-pushing radio style.
