Got my first transistor radio in the early sixties. It was a promotional item from a Sinclair gas station. It was green and had a Dino the dinosaur logo on it. Tuned it to WLS 890 out of Chicago and never looked back.

WLS was my go-to station driving at night on the east coast back in the '60s.  I could tune it in south of Scranton, PA, and carry it all the way to Charleston, SC.

Vividly remember the empowerment of having my own radio the size of a pack of cigarettes with a wired earphone. Its 9v battery would last for a couple of weeks. Early 60’s. WBRE Wilkes-Barre was the clearest station.

WLS, KDKA, WBZ Boston, WRVA Richmond, WJR Detroit, WHO Iowa - all were 50,000 watt clear channel stations.

 

I've got DX cards from them and others from when a couple of friends were seeing what radio stations we could pick up during one of our summer vacations - junior high age if I remember correctly.

 

Sorry, off topic.  I could only get the local stations on my transistor radio - which ate 9 volt batteries at an alarming rate. 

There back on topic. 

 

Had to use a better radio and antenna to go DXing, though.

WFBL, 1390 AM, Syracuse was our rock and roll station in the '50s and '60s.  Fifty some years later I tuned in and found that they were still playing the same top 40 rock and roll in the late '90s and early 2000s. Last time I was up in Syracuse I found that they were playing '70s and '80s top 40.

Someone smarter than me please post the video from Lionel B Cartwright- I watched it all on my radio. It’s on YouTube. As soon as this thread got started, it was the first thing I thought of. Great song!
