Wheel Horse 312-8 Carter Carb.

Recommended Posts

Matthew Miller

I am partially restoring my 312-8 with the M12S engine. Currently it has a Carter #26 Carb on it that the casing surrounding the throttle linkage is completely worn out with about a 1/4" play around the shaft. Can someone help me with a link to a quality carb to replace it. I am not sure how to know if the reproductions I am looking at are total junk or quality parts. I am not completely trying to make a show tractor out of it. It will be used on my .75 acre property to move things in the trailer and do some plowing. Thank you for your help in advance.

WHX??

:WRS:

@ebinmaine among others is our carb queen here. The general consensus ... around here anyway... is the cheap offshore replacements are junk. I have ok luck with them but??? Save the orginal if you can is the rule.

Is the top of  carb worn at the shaft, but the shaft in the bottom hole seem Ok??

If that's what you have you can go down to your favorite hardware store (Ace, etc) and in all those Hillman drawers find 2 Hillman #58087, 1/4" i.d. x 7/16", o.d x 1/16" thick bronze bushings.

Tap these in the recess at the top of the carb around the shaft. if the shaft fits tight in them, hand ream them with a 1/4" drill bit.

As mentioned the chinesium carbs are hit and miss roll of the dice!

One of the problems is they are selling one design carb to fit a 10,12,14,16 hp Kohler.

The original Carter carbs had a different throat  for each hp.

My experience is one aftermarket carb on a 12 hp had good idle but no top end.

The same carb on a 16hp never could get a good low idle but ran good at top end.

Also most aftermarket carbs need to be disassembled when you receive them as they are dirty from manufacturing.

One other note, most have metric threads on the adjusting screws so the number of turns the Kohler manual tells you to set them typically is not correct.

With all that said I have one aftermarket carb on a 12hp that runs good and 2 in the junk box that iI ve stole bowls and floats off of.

I seem to recall @WHX?? has had better luck with the aftermarket carbs on the smaller 6-8 hp Kohlers. Maybe because they don't have as much throat difference between them.

I've had a couple of the Walbro carbs that weren't able to accept the washer.

No groove/hole/space whatever.

I'll likely never run an aftermarket carb on a big block again. Period.  I've personally seen several bad ones here in our own shop.

Small block... maybe. But we still have spares to rebuild so that too is unlikely.

Matt I saw your PM. Answering here for the benefit of future readers.

My recommendation.

1.  PM @76c12091520h Brian Badman.

Ask if he has a replacement available.

2. CALL Lincoln at A to Z Tractor in PA.

If those don't work out lemme know.....
