Throttle help

Posted (edited)

Just wrapped up the restoration on my 71 charger 12, with a kohler k301, but theres still a few adjustments that need done. I pulled the throttle lever and line off when redoing the engine, didn't rebuild or replace anything just took stuff apart to paint it. Before restoration, The throttle lever would work fine, all the way up on the throttle equals top throttle things like that. Well when i put it back together, It now is super touchy, like full throttle is now only half way up on the lever and now i only have idle and full throttle no in-between. Ive adjusted everything with the linkages and even bought a new spring and everything and it still doesn't work like it used to. What should i do?

WHX??

Move the spring on the governor arm to the third hole up from the bottom that's where mine like to be.

Guessing you set the governor to the manual?

3rd hole from the bottom.  Make sure the clamp on the throttle cable  on the valve cover is tight.

@FarmallFarmer09 regularly refer to choke and throttle cables sounding  like a hack saw blade on a bolt  have also added  , medium pull hook end extension springs  to all 3 of my horse set ups , very easy to  lubricate cabling with penetrant , till it runs out the end , starting at  highest point , also use  kroil , easy to  add on a piece of perforated  steel , close to  spring pull area .  eliminated that issue years ago . paint it red or black , it disappears  .  local bone yards have piles of that  trim , metal . pete

Is the governor arm ever contacting the control cable?

Both of those are a serious problem.

My experience shows me that the very first thing you need to do is get a proper throttle cable on there.

The exhaust will melt the cable casing and make it so the interior will hardly move through the exterior.

Also, the cable being against the governor arm is preventing proper motion of that whole system.

Contact with the governor arm is a big problem....

Go under the lowest cooling fin stay behind the governor arm make sure it doesn't contact at any point in its motion

If the cable still moves freely I suppose you could keep using it but  REROUTE it

@pfrederi agree on the reroute , basically  try , spray , try  a spring pull assist , to close ?  that enhances any pull start assist .  also have and use prorated   stainless  trim tabs for a spring pull  assist point .to close . every time you  move the  cable start  point , there is  smooth pull against  to  pull it back to stop  . all my cabling  slides with ease .  front of engine , fan shroud 2 holes close to  cable    lever  swing point ?   short medium pull  extension spring , lubricate all involved . insuring swing / movement ease ? hiding in plane site ? pull to  close / start . have  spring pull assist on all my  stuff , experiment , pete
