rhubarb-custard pie

I received a nice mess of rhubarb last week and the friend who  gave it to me said he really liked rhubarb-custard pie.  

 

I've been eying Ed's rhubarb and blackberry pies--and will construct on some day.

 

So today was a Dutch Oven pie making day.  

 

I'm impressed.  The rhubarb adds a bit of tartness to the sweet custard.  I like the texture--it's kind of like eating fresh made cut-up-your-own-pumpkin pie when compared to pumpkin from the can--I'll take the home made pumpkin filling any day. I also threw in some coconut into the mix--just because I like coconut pie.

Baked in a Dutch oven, no less!

 

When we moved to Ky in the early 90's, both boys were involved with Boy Scouts.  The first com out that I went with them, I took our Dutch oven along and baked an apple pie for the adult's patrol dinner.  The following morning, I had some left over apples, so I scrounged around in the patrol box and came up with enough stuff to make some apple crisp for breakfast.  It was not too long before I got invited to become an Assistant Scout Master.

Nothing beats a great desert on a campout!

 

In our troop, the adult leaders (usually two or three) and any guests were assigned a patrol and took turns with all planning, cooking, eating, and other chores. No spectators. The patrol leaders were in charge.
