May 10, 1869 The Golden Spike is driven, completing the first US Transcontinental Railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah, connecting the Central Pacific Railroad with the Union Pacific.

Dig a bit deeper and you’ll learn a lot more about how plain ol’ profit and competition drove that milestone (with a nod to Abraham Lincoln before he became president, too).
