Fuel Pump replacement oem or aftermarket?

I've had problems with aftermarket fuel pump for a wheel horse 312-8, 1988.  Is it better to spend the money for an oem metal version that is supposed to be a lot more reliable but may be harder to install? I would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks, Richard

Why would a metal pump be more difficult to install?

I haven't looked in years but I don't know if we can still get metal pumps OE.  

 

 

It may be worth seriously considering installing an electric pump.

For the past thirty years or so the Kohler fuel pumps have all been made of plastic. I agree with @ebinmaine that a low pre3ssure electric pump would be a superior choice. You can power it from the supply that feeds your hour meter that way it is fuse protected and turns off with the ignition. You can find them on eBay for about the same price as the mechanical ones. I use these on all of my Wheel Horses.

And, in doing so, you no longer have to be concerned with raw gas diluting the engine oil due to a ruptured pump diaphragm.... and if installed correctly, the electric pump is self priming.

How would you install it incorrectly? 

 

I decided this morning to go with an electric for this C101 I'm working on right now, and I think I know the proper way to install one, as close to the tank as possible, add a filter in front of it, and pay attention to the flow arrow.  I'm gonna feed mine from the ignition circuit at the switch and add a fuse for it behind the dash, I just have finished replacing the wiring so I'm familiar with it right now.

I've searched for them NOS but can't even find that anymore . I seen in another post earlier that the metal pumps haven't been made in over 30YRs. IDK I've never done the math but that's probably pretty close. I really like the old metal pumps on the older mochines (espeicaly the S/G's) but don't mind Epumps on the 300,400,500 series and think they are a big improvement when fuel tank is under the seat plus you can hide Epump better on them.
