C-160 Automatic Kohler 10hp 48" Mower Deck

New to Wheel Horse.  I understand the 10hp is not enough to properly power the 48" mower deck. With that said I see my options as 1) swap to a 42" mower deck or 2) swap in a 16hp Kohler.

 

Am I missing anything?

What model do you have? If its a B or C-Series a deck swap would be simpler, but if you wanted, a 16hp swap wouldn't be too difficult.

I'd first swap the deck, it'll take 20-30mins, but if you want more power a engine swap wouldn't be hard depending on tools, equipment, etc.

I've used a 48 with a 10hp several times. 

 

More hp is always better but unless you're cutting very heavy grass your 10hp will be fine. Will it struggle in some places? Probably, but it will work if you slow down.

Mowed for the first time yesterday, no speed, constant bogging, uneven cut

I have mowed with both a 312-8 and a 310-8 . As long as you cut dry grass at the correct adjustment height and the grass isn't ridiculously tall you should be fine. I never really noticed a big difference between either model mowing with both of the engines being Kohler Magnums. However I would suggest the 42'' side discharge. Just my experiences.

I would swap a k341 back in, especially if you had one. I believe a Magnum series motor would swap in easy also. Might cost little more to start with, but I know I would be more satisfied. Saying all that I've had pretty good luck mowing with the 10/12hp k series and Magnums through the years but with 42" deck or smaller.

@kpinnc or @953 nut might know the availability better down there. I'm under the impression that a 16 HP in NC is rare as hen's teeth.  

 

A Magnum would hit the hood on a C series.

My focus will be to trade out my 48" rebuilt deck for a clean 42" .  Tractor Parts Yard has one for $250

Nt really a problem.  take off teh big Plastic shroud and put on a old fashioned round A/C cover.

you may want to check the compatibility of the deck in this photo with your model tractor -- i'm not sure that lift carriage assembly is match for your tractor? I would ask others on the forum here ?? 

as an fyi - WH does have a 42 and 36 inch rear discharge model in addition to the 42 side model -- so depending on local availability you have other options than just the 42 side discharge -- i just am not sure the deck photo is a match for that tractor?
