ri702bill 10,993 #2 Posted Wednesday at 05:33 PM (edited) Hmmm. is the cam the source of the problem or is it the victim here?? Did you break the connecting rod?? I ask because I bought two C81's years ago. One ran but was tired; the other broke the connecting rod, snapped the cam in two and blew out the back cam mount. And ventilated the block bigtime. I did save the head, flywheel, tins, oil pan , points & coil though... Edited Wednesday at 05:52 PM by ri702bill
gt14rider 1,028 #3 Posted Wednesday at 07:03 PM Hi all @ri702bill , rebuilt that k181 in spring of 2018, put it together with a bunch of parts, so could be it was cracked when installed, it all ways had a tic, but not bad enough to pull apart, the dreaded kohler tic. Anyway got to dig up another cam.
gt14rider 1,028 #4 Posted Wednesday at 08:01 PM Got it apart, what you think? A little JP Weld might work. Got a cat scan done, confirmed, cam fubar. 3

gt14rider 1,028 #7 Posted Thursday at 12:01 AM Yah she's a humdinger, she has to be right in the middle everything. Found the camshaft, cleaned it up, should work. Will clean up the block, new gaskets, couple seals, I already rebuilt the fuel pump, and carburetor. Had to make bushing NLA, come out great, new shaft and made some foam gaskets out of a pre air filter .
WHX?? 53,876 #8 Posted Thursday at 01:31 AM What is the blue stuff on the fuel pump? Nice job on the bushing maybe we can make them now @Achto Always thought a o-ring on the shaft wouldn't hurt.

gt14rider 1,028 #10 Posted Thursday at 02:17 AM @WHX?? the blue is magic marker, poor man's Persian blue. Put it on sandpaper on glass, check the high spots

We was just talkin about glassing pumps. Good trick ... gonna those pics for my fuel pump instructional. I always misted them with a rattle can like a head but the mist can go where you don't want it to. Edited Thursday at 02:34 AM by WHX??

Yep been there done that ... guy at plow day said he checked his oil ... bull roar. Nothin but sludge in the pan. Got extremely lucky and only busted the cam. Never even bent the cam axle. Can't believe it ran with only a tic Rider. Edited Thursday at 02:54 AM by WHX??
gt14rider 1,028 #13 Posted Thursday at 03:20 AM @WHX?? I don't think it was broken al the way, in the video you can see a chunk out of the cam,but it didn't break till I took the cam pin out. This was in the pan. It ran when it was parked. Lasted 8 years

gt14rider 1,028 #17 Posted yesterday at 03:31 PM Got a couple of questions, should I just hit the cylinder with dingle balls, and reinstall piston. 2-4 thousands, top middle and bottom. 2.956 - 2.959 (measurements may vary, used telescoping gauge and calipers) don't have big enough micrometer. No ridge

WHX?? 53,876 #19 Posted 23 hours ago Your gonna get yelled at by the guys for using calipers but hey we don't have mics. Yeah a little out but you were using calipers so your dims might be questionable. Did it smoke? What did the top of the piston look like... oil wash? Try Richard's trick.

I know a caliper is no replacement for a good mic but I would have no trouble trusting the measurement's from the telescoping gauges if we are using a known repeatable caliper. Could always double check by using @953 nut 's trick. Which by the way is a great post if you haven't had a chance to read it.
gt14rider 1,028 #21 Posted 17 hours ago @WHX?? @sqrlgtr took my time and measured the cylinder, top, middle, bottom and below ring line. Side to side and front to back. Piston is 20 over. Here are the numbers.
gt14rider 1,028 #22 Posted 17 hours ago Kohler specs.
sqrlgtr 1,826 #23 Posted 10 hours ago I would think with those numbers you could just hone and set of rings and should be good.
gt14rider 1,028 #24 Posted 2 hours ago Ok just ordered genuine kohler rings, and a 3" dingleberry hone. Now we wait. Connecting rod and crank journal look good so not going to change. Already glassed head and lapped the valves.
