CD Long Jr 21 #1 Posted 16 hours ago Scored a 1992 Wheel Horse 312-8 today with deck & front blade for 100 bucks. I got homework to do. Engine has no spark plug wire or left side engine cover. Engine does turn over by hand & seems to have compression. Can't get the PTO to engage, the shaft isn't sliding in. Choke cable stuck, throttle cable operates. Deck has minor rot on the right side, but I bought the tractor for snow plowing, I will sell the deck. I had 60s & 70s Cub Cadets & John Deere tractors. I know decks & mule drives were pricey in 2019 when I sold all my garden tractors & bought a new Cub cadet XT1 LT42 with rear bagger, brush guard & arm rests. I missed a garden tractor to plow with. A walk behind snowblower just don't get it done. Snowblower for her is in the future too. Maybe even a sleeve hitch and tiller.
kpinnc 16,352 #2 Posted 15 hours ago (edited) All of the missing engine tins can be found. Any Magnum 10-16hp are the same. The flywheel cover is plastic and the same applies for it. If turning that flywheel proves she has compression, she WILL run. A 312 is a great machine. You can definitely use it for what you're planning. A little love goes a long way on these old tractors. You also already have the rear axle hitch for tillers, snow blades and even grader blades. Well done! Edited 15 hours ago by kpinnc
CD Long Jr 21 #3 Posted 14 hours ago Thank you kpinnc! The PTO issue is repaired for now. I found out the engine needs to be running @ idle to engage the PTO. I served 1970-1990/ Field Artillery- 105 towed, Armor & Cavalry-M551 Sheridan, M48A5,M60A1 &M60A3, I was also a Combat Engineer. Yeah, I loved blowin' things up. Welcome home brother. 4
ebinmaine 76,182 #4 Posted 14 hours ago @CD Long Jr Thank you for your service. As stated above the parts availability on Wheelhorses overall is excellent. Redsquare has several great vendors. The members tend to take care of each other as well. You'll find yourself more and more impressed with that mo-chine every time you use it!
CD Long Jr 21 #5 Posted 13 hours ago Thank you ebinmaine. I'm tryin' to get familiar the forum. Good info, I'll check em out. I'm an Evil Bayer but would sooner spend my money with folks here that know our tractors.
953 nut 63,364 #6 Posted 11 hours ago Nice introduction. The 312-8 will push a lot of snow with tire chains and some wheel weights or liquid filled tires. The ignition module is missing from your engine, it should be where I have circled your photo. The attached manual should be helpful. PS: ditch the WD-40 and get some KROil or PB Blaster. 1

SylvanLakeWH 30,031 #8 Posted 11 hours ago (edited) I have a C-125 12 hp and a C-105 10 hp which are basically the same thing. Both set up for snow plowing... Great machines!!! Edited 11 hours ago by SylvanLakeWH

It's been disproven many times as a penetrant. Tests have shown it's little to no better than water. Kroil. Top shelf. Old original formula Liquid Wrench. A mix of ATF & acetone. WD40 BRAND makes a good Specialist Penetrating Oil.

CD Long Jr 21 #12 Posted 3 hours ago 953 nut, thank you. Thanks to all of you. I love this forum already. Lots of good folks and advice here! I Have some PB Blaster & will look into the Kroil. I intend to roll her off the trailer, remove the deck, measure the deck & install the front blade. I have found some wheel weights in FB market place at a reasonable price. As far as tire chains, would the chains with the Vs on the cross links be better? I have a concrete driveway, but I do yard work, including snow removal, for several elderly ladies in the subdivision that can't afford the lawn services. They have asphalt driveways.

If needed, add weight, then chains - go with the rubber type.
