Disassembly continues on the C160…

Well, in between house projects for the wife,
I’ve managed to get pretty deep into the disassembly on the C160. It’s crazy… I have not come across one single frozen bolt yet! Gotta love that. I sanded down the front of the frame, primer’d it and painted a little section to see what my paint choice looked like for once the other components all get ready for paint. I think I’m going to go with Sunrise Red Rustoleum. I painted the mower deck and fenders and seat pan that color back when I was just tinkering with the beginning of the restoration and I like the look of it. For the rims, I am thinking about Rustoleum Antique White. From what I’ve read here on the forummany of you guys have used it and it looks pretty good… That nice creamy off-white look almost like Ford Wimbledon white.

lol, even though I’m a pretty confident Mechanic after all my experience with the case tractors, I have been videotaping the important segments of disassembly and labeling a lot of parts just to be safe.

It is now officially in two halves🤣 next step is going to be some serious cleaning and sanding/media blasting. I’m not going gangbusters on the sanding on this one… My hands took a real beating when I redid my CASE 444, so there’s going to be a lot of media blasting work done on this one.

Nice! Do check for rust & cracks on the "F" plate of the frame - particularly around the four Underlive mounting holes.... If there is an issue, NOW is the time to fix it right.

@RoubaixRider looks like you’re off to a good start. As far as I know there really isn’t a set color for any of the parts. I used an easily available red too. I used IH red, on all my tractors. It makes it easier to match later, and saves on paint. one can could cover all of them if touching up or replacing rusted bodywork.

I'm a Rustoleum Regal Red and Canvas White fan myself just because they are so readily available to me. I have been thinking about going to the IH Red but undecided. Sometimes it looks better to my eye then sometimes the Regal looks better, sometimes it looks exactly the same. BTW look like your off to a good start.

Shucks I don't remember. That was automotive (Dupont Imron) paint and 20 years ago. I'll dig around and let you know.

My last two restorations are done in Sunrise Red. I think the C-175 is a little more orangee (if that’s a word!) than I would have liked. I’ve yet to park them side by side. The wheels on the C-175 are actually Benjamin Moore oil base Linen white, which I must say I was extremely pleased with. It layed down beautifully, dried nicely and didn’t stink up my garage. Plus it was only around $30 for a quart. I’ll definitely use that again.

That white reminds me of the rustoleum Navajo white, which is no longer available .

ok, this is the type of feedback I really appreciate. Forgive me guys, will be learning a bit on the way here as all my experience is with CASE. Are you referring to the large flat plate area of the frame that joints by four bolts to the transmission? I had a good look while cleaning the rest of the frame for cracks, especially in the welds.

It’s also very encouraging seeing all the work you’ve all done…some beautiful restos. My new front rims/tires arrived yesterday, so I prepped them and shot Rutileum Antique White. Really like the look.

Awesome. I had a good look at it this morning with a lupe to check for any cracks around bolt holes, welds, etc. and it looks good. Was able to get a shot of primer and paint on it and the biggest challenge is cleaning and decreasing from 1976.🤓 the transmission/gearbox is going to be the biggest challenge to get clean… All those nooks and crannies! Got my new front rims and tires from M.E Miller… going with a slightly narrower tire on the front… About 5 inches.

Be sure and cover those hydraulic line ports. The smallest amount of grit allowed into the system can destroy it. Think surgical clean! 

 

And if it had ATF in it before, keep using it.
