Sparky-(Admin) 23,909 #1 Posted 19 hours ago The starter/generator on my 857 starts and charges well…but it’s noisy. It’s model #1101973. I’m looking for a rebuild kit. Amazon has what I think is the exact same kit that I Save Tractors was selling (some picture and same write up) for $43. The number on mine isn’t on the list that the Amazon ad shows, it lists off many numbers and then says “and many more”. Am I one of the many more? I assume mine is just a standard start/gen from the 60’s? The last two pics are off the Amazon page.
702854boy 335 #2 Posted 19 hours ago If you take the s/g apart and find that the brushes are in decent condition you might be able to find just the bearings for it. 1
ri702bill 10,328 #3 Posted 19 hours ago Mike: That kit fits both styles of S/G's. Early ones with 2 ball bearings, later ones with 1 bushing and 1 ball bearing. Should be fine? Does Yours have two oil cups on it?? My 854 does - 2 bearings. Check on Fleabay - search under Delco Remy Starter Generator. There is an Electric Shop that sells kits... good feedback rating. Haven’t opened it yet, I suspect it’s all original so I figure if it’s apart I might as well replace everything and hopefully never have to open it up again.

I can see when the casting has been changed to eliminate em though

squonk 44,780 #9 Posted 17 hours ago The Genny's are pretty much all the same. Use the same bearings or maybe one end has the bushing. 90% of Delco genny use the same R430 brushes. I've probably done about a dozen WH genny's and everyone was the same. 1
Handy Don 14,894 #10 Posted 15 hours ago On the one that I’ve done, the pulley-end bearing needed replacing, but the other one was tight, smooth, and quiet so I left it. The brushes were only ⅓ gone so they got left in too.

The inner bearing / bushing just cruises along for the ride!

When I first set up the 854, I tried not to over tighten the S/G belt. Then I watched it slip on the first crank as it hit the compression stroke (this is a spark-retard K181, so no help on compression). So much for being “gentle." 953 nut 62,640 #13 Posted 12 hours ago If you have bearings on both ends this is a kit I have used with good results. 47 minutes ago, Handy Don said: I tried not to over tighten the S/G belt. squonk 44,780 #14 Posted 54 minutes ago Funny. Most of the bearings I've replaced were the non pulley end.
