6 speed problems

Recommended Posts

702854boy

We put my six speed in the tractor last night and trying to drive it, I found out that low range was another neutral but high range worked. I was able to shift through all gears in low range with the clutch disengaged and go from low to high without grinding. We took the tranny back off today and tore it apart again and found out what was wrong. Are any of you tranny experts able to see whats wrong from this photo? I might not have taken the best photo but I tried

I'm feeling bad about this Howard. First the axles and now this. I ran it through all the gears during the flushing process and everything seemed fine but that was just on the bench driving the input shaft with a drill. I tried to compare your picture with the one I took and I can't pinpoint anything but they aren't the same views. @stevasaurus Steve, do you see anything? Here's my pictures1511420061_5060Cleanedb.jpg.9f39e13af13f32345bd014577b1eec40.jpg109188595_5060Cleaneda.jpg.6ca25e0cb860f53fa8fad1b69a9bcc42.jpg again.

It's okay, nothings been broke and this has also given us the chance to tear it apart and see how everything works and learn from this. And we think these little mess ups in it are just from the person who went through it before you did and they were in a hurry to put it back together.

I'm thinking Joe is on the right track here. Just pull things out, maybe even everything, and step by step put it back together. If the problem can be identified most likely you'd have to do that anyways.

We had identified the problem last night because of dad's memory from watching a bunch of videos, I was just curious to see if anyone could see what we found was wrong

Looks to me like the cluster gear is assembled incorrectly. I could be wrong though...

If that's the assembly of gears that is on the input shaft you would be right, the bottom gear for the high shift fork was installed upside down, @Racinbob, we think it was the dude before you that took it apart and didn't put it together right because you didn't dig into any of that. But anyway, it was a free fix, and we learned how it all goes together and learned how it works so I'm not complaining

You're right, I saw no reason to tear into it any further. If I had noticed (and I should have) the axles being wrong I likely would have because I would have changed them.

Howard, I love your attitude and desire to learn. @stevasaurus if you ever decide to retire as the guru here this young man will be waiting in the wings. :thumbs2:

That's the only way to live. It's no fun just sitting around and doing nothing all day. And it;s the only way to keep this hobby alive is to learn how it all works.

Once I have enough tools and income and space to work I'd happily help others work on their tractors.
