416-8 Onan

Recommended Posts

AHS

This is new to me. I found it at the junkyard! It has an Onan 16, 8 speed, FEL front spindles and a tall chute snowblower that was used on gravel driveway hard! The guy passed who owned the 416-8. Another one saved from the scrap pile! Ok, there is no fire… but i think i know why! It is the 9 pin connector that three wires have been cut from. There is no model number, no stickers… all i have is a motor number to go by. Just a 16hp Onan, 650hrs, and a volt gauge. What I wanna know is can you tell the year from the tag? I think i can find the wiring guide! Here’s the pictures and the tag.

Model and spec # 216G-I710974 Ser. D90367O918. That what i can decipher!

Good morning! Thank you @Ed Kennell!! So, back to my 416, I originally bought it for the 8 speed, but you know, the motor might run!! It occurred to me that the previous owner was ripping out all those lights on the dash. When it was simply the 9 pin connector! I have 2 white wires that come from a black loom (off the stator?) that go to the rectifier, correct?

So, i have battery voltage at the switch, cause it turn over, but i have no spark.

The only other question that i have is where is the white wire (down by the starter) with the boot on it, where does that go?

Wondering if the white wire was originally yellow. That one powers the ignition coil.

When the pto is off one half of the pto switch powers the ignition.

When the pto is on the seat switch powers the ignition. The white wire at the seat switch goes to the idiot lights lighting up that one when the pto is on but no operator in seat= no power to ignition coil. That white wire is not required for the engine to run.

Are you getting 12 volts to the ignition coil?

White wire by the starter is for the cylinder head heat switch that turns on an indicator light on a 520.

The grey wire for the tachometer on a 520 will also be in the engine harness.

The Onan engine harness has all the wires so it can be used in all Wheel Horse tractors (that came with the P series Onan engine).

Yep. Had both of those wires on the 518-H that doesn’t use either of them! I was sure a PO had messed with it until I compared the 518 and 520 schematics & made the “connections" that @cleat describes here!

Ok!! So, that is why the gray wire is in the harness, but there is nothing on the other side!! So, if im reading it right, B goes thru both fuses to the solenoid AND to the regulator?

I enclosed a typical 416 wire diagram.

According to it one red wire goes to the battery cable at the starter motor and the other one goes to the regulator.

Best thing you can do is run a wire directly from the regulator to the solenoid through a 30A inline fuse and just leave the existing red wire from the solenoid in place to power the tractor.

That takes the charge current out of the 9 pin connector greatly reducing it's probability of having a meltdown.

Wheel Horse (or Onan) wired the early tractors that way on the earlier models.

Ok! I got it! So, i got this 89 416 wiring diagram. I think the starter solenoid is different from 89 to 90.

Yep, as Gwest posted, the 89 is how I rewire my tractors.

It was better, I don't know why they changed.

@cleat Im a Kohler guy. My word, ain’t Kohler wiring easy compared to this!! So, Onan starter sol…. 89 and 90, are they the same? Cause 89 is how. I want to wire it as well! Ill get a pic of the starter solenoid once i get outside

I think mine is wired the 1990 way. Look at that bugger noted in the blue wire, i guess that’ll have to be addressed!!!

Yep, that is the later way as you can tell by only one small wire at the battery cable connection on the solenoid.

An early version would have two small wires, one to power the tractor, and one from the regulator to charge the battery.

Here is the schematic for a later model 416.

416 wire harness.pdf

Here it is modified to be somewhat simpler.

I am doing this to my 416 that is currently being refurbished.

Note that mine is a hydro with auto centering to neutral so I eliminated the neutral switch.

@cleat what did you use for a fuse? 30A?

Sorry, my writing isn't very good.

Yes, a 30 Amp fuse on the charge circuit mainly because that is what wheel horse used.
