857 Fuel Pump Rebuild

Recommended Posts

sqrlgtr

Look what came in mail today. Wasn’t expecting it this quick. + 1 for then and know auto. Couple questions for those that have experience rebuilding these pumps.

1. Best way to get valves out of body? One just fell out hadnt tried getting other one out yet…

2. What is the little black dots that came in kit and what is the gasket with the 2 holes in it go too? I know the one that goes between pump and block.

3. Best way to get valves apart once I get both out of pump body lol????

I used the right sized socket to drive them out and in, helps keep them square.

@rjg854hello friend, I can see driving them in but I didn't think they could be drove out. Keep in mind I've not looked at pump in a day or two and don't have it in front of me at the moment. Now that I think about it, seems like they were indentions in pump for that purpose. I believe I'm getting a better mental picture of how they are put together now. I hope it's not rocket science, seeing how I'm, a brain surgeon.....:D

Then and now kits contain the valves (small black dots) and springs for the old style pump as well as the newer style.

@wallfish the pick was first thing I grabbed but the one side want move. tried my favorite needle nose also. The ol :tools-hammer: hammer and socket trick is next on list as rjg854 suggested earlier.

Does anyone have an exploded view of the type of pump that's in picture? The valve in the right side of pic just kinda fell out when I separated pump and not sure if I have the right side facing out?

The check valves need to be placed with one in the open end up position and one in the open end down position. As the diaphragm moves down the inlet valve will open and the outlet valve will close, as it moves up the outlet will open and the inlet will close. When properly installed there should be little or no resistance to air flow from the inlet side if slight air pressure is applied.

@953 nut thank you I haven't made back to fuel pump yet but got to looking at my picture and got to thinking that I had to have reversed it when I laid it back in there for pic. Thanks a bunch for your help.

The pumps I’ve had open seemed symmetric as far as the ports and valves and I’ve seen the inlet/outlet configuration in both ways on different WH engines!

Be sure to keep track so that when you reassemble and mount it, the ports are at your desired ends, i.e. inlet toward fuel tank line and outlet toward carb line!

Probably all but unanimous who among members here has done something like that--more than once.

Looks good!

In the case of these fuel pumps the inlet could become the outlet and visa versa and it would work.

Thanks for the post of this vacuum pump. Just my :twocents-02cents: if you IMG_0245.jpeg.b9638f201024fab3aa4de8a2347bf1a3.jpegfind find you don’t like this pump because being vacuum, you can always switch to an electric pump. I put one on my 856 and I like it a lot starts right up.I have the name of the company if you would like it.
