854 ignition switch

Does anyone know what type of switch to get for my 854 that has a s/g?

The factory original starter / ignition switch was # 7268. Since this switch type hasn't been used in over sixty years it is unlikely that you will find a new one.

The wiring diagram below will allow you to use a solenoid and modern 103990 ignition switch. I would suggest adding a 25 amp fuse on the wire from the solenoid to the "B" terminal of the switch

No no Richard ... This is the 70 amp switch that directly feeds the starter with heavy gauge wires. If it's original that is. 

 

Guy by the name of @new to horses has plenty and I have a couple extras too. He is not on here much tho but you'll find them at one of our favorite vendors here. Probably evil bay too. 

 

It can be upgraded to Richard's diagram but much easier just to get a new correct switch. 

 

Here's the manual ... find the part number and research it. It is your homework.

I do have the original one and it was still working but I decided I wanted to switch it over to the solenoid and low amp switch to make it a little less likely to let all the magic smoke out.

Ahh ok ...  Richards diagram then. Use a generic four post switch then.

No need to replace the switch. Just add the solenoid and get rid of the heavy wire to the switch if you want to. Replace with 14 gauge wire.

The original switch should now outlast the rest of the tractor.

I am in full agreement in adding a solenoid to the 854 - I did mine years ago. I made up a flat plate and mounted it to to  back end of the S/G - that allowed short runs for the wiring. Running the heavy amperage load thru an ignition switch is not a good longterm idea.....

Is it even possible for the tractor to degrade if taken care of properly?

One example of adding a solenoid and attaching it to the generator and having it fit under the 854 hood. Very similar to @ri702bill’s. 

Here in our files section, are two versions of the 854 wiring diagram--with and without a solenoid.

And I see the added weather resistant inline fuse holder - a "must have" when rewiring a 50 plus year old tractor.
