His mom emptied Clorox bottles, wash them, fill about half water and freeze it. Then add water so we'd have cold water to drink on the fishing/camping trip. We had seen enough snakes in the wild strawberries that instead of sleeping in a tent on the ground we slept in the back of the El Camino. In the middle of the night Paul asked "What's the madder wif me. I feel funny." (Say that with a lisp.) I turned on a flashlight and his bottom lip was as fat as my thumb and his hands were yellowish. He tried to take a drink of water and his lip wouldn't form a seal and water dribbled down his shirt. As it started to rain, I drove out to the county road and sat there because I had no idea of where we were and had no idea of which way to go. (apparently Paul was in no condition to give me directions.) Daylight came and we headed home. Later Paul said he took a drink out of the Clorox jug and it was real Clorox. He spat it out and even brushed his teeth--so he says. I was constructing a building for a doctor and told him Paul's story. He said it was a wonder that Paul survived. Clorox causes mucus membranes to swell and if he had swallowed any, his throat would have swollen shut. Some of the dumb things we do.

Making one's own sustenance from wild caught foods is another of many lost or dying arts/skills.

I haven’t put together a video yet, but it is soaking in the fridge in water. It’s yummy! Tastes like raspberry water to me! 3

Part of that was learning to read And communicate in binary. A skill long since forgotten but we found it fascinating
