71' Charger 12 Automatic Help.

Recommended Posts

FarmallFarmer09

Just purchased my first wheel horse. Dont know anything about them, Ive got more large tractors, so i thought itd be nice to get into garden tractors. I purchased a wheel horse Charger 12 Automatic, that came with a snow plow, And a snow blower. all 3 work fantastic. Except for one thing. It has an "Electric clutch" Switch on it, and no matter if its in the on or off position, The other two pulleys are spinning. What can i do about this? And then also, when i go to use the snow blower in the winter, What pulley on the electric clutch do i put it on? It has 2 i believe. I was told this was a rare bunch, as the snow blower was rare, and aparently, because this has a cigarette lighter on it, its rare too? I highly doubt so, i think the guy i bought it from put it on there. And while im here, If you have just some basic info or anything i need to look out for on these charger 12s, Please let me know. As i said, this is my first wheel horse. Thank you. PXL_20250710_193338224.jpg.014365090030ef36dcac86a9b960c330.jpg

:WRS:  A lot of the early :wh:'s had lighters on them, so it's not that rare, what makes them rare is that they are still there.  You can go to the document forum and download a manual for your model tractor.  You might have to do a bit of searching to find the correct model, but it's most likely there.  Your tractor looks to be in pretty decent shape.  The model number should be on the dash tower, that will aid your search.

Hello and welcome.   Wheel horse used two different oils in the automatic transmissions make sure you put the proper one in that is currently in the tractor there should be a sticker under the seat  letting you know which one or just pull the dip stick and look at the color of the oil. Being new to you tractor  I would change the Trans filter and oil.  The smaller pulley  is the one to use for the snow blower and the larger one for the mower deck. That's all I can help you with.

The  1971 Charger 12 has a Sundstrand 90-2046 transmission that probably came with ATF (pink color).    Many were later changed to 30 weight motor oil (amber color).   If the fluid looks foamy and milky, it contains water and should be drained and flushed.

Do not mix the two.

@ebinmaine has a list that you can use to check your new tractor.

Welcome to Red Square.

Does the pulley spin without the engine running or always spin with the engine running?

There is a bearing in the clutch that allows the shaft to spin in the pulley. When the clutch is turned on the shaft and pulley are joined by friction and turn together.

Any model numbers and serial numbers on the attachments? The snowthrower appears to be a 1973 or later model when the front idler assembly shown was first used.

Here's that list. It covers all models possible so there's a LOT of information.

The pulleys on electric PTOs will spin even turned off (there is no brake).  However if there is a belt on them they will stop spinning in the off position. When you turn switch on you should hear a strong click and see a slight movement in the Clutch.

Interesting yo have the electric PTO  they normally came on Electros which also had hydro lift..

It is important to determine what type ignition system you tractor has.  Kohler used 3 different ignition systems on Chargers...Battery points....Magneto Points ...and Breakerless.  Do not make any wiring or ignition switch changes until you determine what style you have.  Incorrect wiring will fry components.  A picture of the engine from the left side would help us figure out what you have.

Battery Points Ignition system. Do not have to worry about frying anything like yo could on a Magneto or breakerless.

pulley spins while the engine is running, never while its off. And that is with no attachments. I dont know where to find the id tag on the snow blower.

So does that mean that the pulley is gonna spin while no attachments?

It will spin but if you put any drag on it it will stop.

In my area snow plows sell for $50 to $150 depending on condition.      Post a picture of the plow and all the levers, axle bracket, scraper bar.

That appears to be a "Short Frame" plow. That'll fit several models in the early to mid 60s.

I noticed that. its too short to fit on mine. Does that make the value go up?

Depends on region/ show/ who's trying to buy.

Up here in the northeast that's $100 to $200 depending on several variables.

Your snowthrower has the 4 grooved rollers that the chute turns in. That makes it 1980 or older. The side extensions you have were first used in 1975. Click on the fuzzy picture in this link. Have tried to capture VIN plates so we know where they are located but still difficult sometimes.
