Jamie Sullivan 2 #1 Posted July 1 Hello all. My son who is 16 year old and autistic loves wheel horse tractors. He has a 1975 C100 8sp 10hp. He wants a straight pipe to completely replace the muffler. Straight up from the engine. Can someone help me and point me in the direction of how I can acquire one? Im not sure if this will be a completely custom item or if someone has found an off the shelf header that worked. I appreciate any help you all can provide. Also if you feel this will hurt the engine or make it run bad please share that as well.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,599 #2 Posted July 1 Personally, I wouldn't do it. If you support a pipe with a bracket, the pipe will vibrate and damage your engine. And the exhaust could blow in your face and become a problem going under low lying tree branches. Again, I personally wouldn't do it.
ebinmaine 72,382 #3 Posted July 1 It won't hurt the engine any but it WILL REQUIRE CONSTANT EAR PROTECTION while running the machine. The engine outlet is standard black iron pipe. Many decent hardware stores would have the pieces. Another option could be to start with black iron to get out from under the hood and switch to a chrome lavatory drain pipe. 3 minutes ago, T-Mo said: the exhaust could blow in your face and become a problem This is a very important point. I have a tractor with tall exhaust. Very tall. I had to go "silly level" height and even then it occasionally gets me.
953 nut 59,746 #4 Posted July 1 Supporting the exhaust pipe is very important. The pipe from the engine is one inch black iron pipe and I supported mine using a 1" X 1/2" X 1" black Iron T fitting and a 1/2" pipe plug drilled to accept a 1/4-20 bolt. You will probably want some sort of muffler just to act as a flame arrestor. 2
Achto 29,351 #5 Posted July 2 (edited) I have this pipe on my pulling tractor. It's inexpensive, looks good when new, light weight, it's loud and obnoxious. It also slips over a 1" water pipe so you can use that to attach it to the engine. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-622147?seid=srese1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwjo7DBhCrARIsACWauSnLDSu8XZxIOU2C_N6uIlHs1_uEGm1FtUuy16plEyVn4c_UjpU_DrQaAmPOEALw_wcB Pic of my puller with the above pipe on it. Ear protection a must. Edited July 2 by Achto
JoeM 8,284 #6 Posted July 2 I have done it a couple different way. I used flex exhaust and also mandrel bend tubing from Summit Racing. They do have different sizes. I have had them up but prefer down and the vid has the sound straight. I did Installed a Harley insert in to the pipe later to calm it down a touch. The mandrel tube is light and can be welded easily. Summit search. Exhaust Tubing, Mandrel Bend 2

A while back I bought 2 of the cutest little glasspacks you ever did see. Patriot Exhaust maybe?? They'll eventually be on a Colossus engine. 1
Achto 29,351 #10 Posted July 2 1 minute ago, ebinmaine said: Very interesting. Drag pipe baffles are made to slip inside of strait pipes. They reduce the sound a lil bit but not a lot. Their main purpose is to create turbulence in the exhaust so that the engine will run good in the mid range. No resistance drag pipes are for running wide open throttle, not for cruising down the road. I.E. good for drag racing or pulling, not for every day use. 1

Pullstart 66,597 #13 Posted July 2 (edited) I’ve built quite a few different exhaust systems. Here are some examples for ideas… Custom built stack muffler, brace, etc. Cherry Bomb stack, with Honda Shadow Baffle Full exhaust system #1, rear exit, built with race car headers Full exhaust system #2, Briggs twin two into one, into two, dual rear exit exhaust Dual stainless stacks, WITH stock style muffler Edited July 2 by Pullstart One more link
ri702bill 9,342 #14 Posted July 2 Two things come to mind... The lower support - bolted to the engine itself - is required. These Kohler engines require a small amount of back pressure in the exhaust to run properly. There is a perforated disc in the outlet of the glasspack of my stack setup for this. The one from @953 nut.. And the one I did on mt 854 8 speed...
WHX?? 51,691 #15 Posted July 3 Nice to see your boy is interested in tractors. Yes hearing protection should be used on any machine making noise. Signed: An old coot who didn't practice what he preaches ... 1
