Avoid overfilling the gas tank

Recommended Posts

Teddy da Bear62

Hey guys and Gals!

Something that has plagued this old bear for decades.  I tend to overfill gas tanks!

I have to use funnel.  I try to watch and listen as the sound changes as it nears full.

But inevitably, I overflow the tank maybe 10% of the time.

This seems to contribute to dangerous situations such as fires🔥.......some even ummmm......recently......😏

I'm looking for suggestions to avoid this.

Other than hearing aides, stronger glasses, better supervision.....etc.

Is there anything on the market to prevent gas tank overflow?  I know pumps at the station have it.  But I am not dragging wheel horse to gas station.

I want something for a gas can.

We use a battery operated fuel pump wand.

Works great.

One with an automatic shut off is especially useful.

Or a smaller gas can. The tank on my WH is about 1/2 gallon. I take a 5 gallon tank to the station, at home I fill into a 1 gallon tank the amount I think I need, then put a little back. Using the smaller can also give a lot more control.

Your idea has merit.

Sometimes this crusty old bear is lifting a 5 gallon army, Gerry can.

I have used the "NO SPILL GAS CAN" for several years. You control the flow with a push button on the spout, no gas comes out until you push the button. It has a float in the spout that will shut off the flow for you when the tank is nearly full.

Thank you, but that still involves lifting a heavy gas can at times.

I'm still leaning on rjg854's unit.

I think the can will remain on the floor?

After 60 plus years of filling small gas tanks, I have mastered the art of only spilling about a 1/4 cup full. For me, that's perfection.

Just don't fill them running, or over the grass.

At age 75 I find lifting a 5 gallon can near impossible without an incident. Therefore, I transfer gas into several 1 or 2 gallon cans. Much easier and more control.

It is only a 2 1/2 gallon can, I am 80, I've had a stroke and get around on a walker so the smaller can is just right for me.

I like using VP fuel jugs with the Flo-Fast hand pump with 80 micron filter. I have 3 setups. 1 for home, 1 for the trailer and 1 for the motorcycle.

Flea Bay does have cheaper ones, but I have no experience with them.  I've had good luck with this brand.  The first one lasted about 5 years, and the one I have now is about 3 years old.  But yes, you can leave the can sitting on the ground, and the hose is long enough to reach the tank easily.  And shuts off auto-magic-ly.
