C-161 electrical issues - Starting

Recommended Posts

Hello, Have a C-161 Manual transmission Kohler engine.

I had been mowing a good bit and thought I would wash grass and dirt off it.  Well apparently got something wet and now may have shorted something out. After drying out, something is still wrong it tried to start a couple of time, but now nothing, unless I use two jumpers from the switch connector (and I even replaced switch and still have issue).  It will start and run and lights will work etc. except with way I have it jumper-ed it won't shut off unless you disconnect the 1st jumper.

To start and keep it running, use two jumper wires from the switch connector (five blade).  1st. jumper wire from the black wire to the positive on the battery and 2nd jumper wire from red wire to positive on the battery to engage the starter to start it.  hope that makes sense, see pictures  (Note - the amp meter was showing charging even though switch off and even disconnected, so to rule the amp meter I by passed it.).  Did the the one relay block get too wet and short out?   Other side note,  have had some issues with mice and even had a black snake in it this morning, guess it was looking for food.  Do not see any wires chewed, and it was running fine until hosed off dirt and grass clippings.

Thoughts or suggestions??

Thanks.

I'm going to guess that the big black snake has something to do with the lack of mouse damage in the wiring.

I washed the engine on my 14-8 and it would not start.  I waited a day for everything to dry, and it started.  Probably dampened the coil or condenser and spark came back when they dried.

If you can successfully start/run using the jumpers from battery to switch, that leaves two possible sources of the problem:

1. the switch itself is no good. Get out your test meter and confirm that conductivity/non-conductivity is correct among the various terminals (this varies by switch model so you need your wiring diagram in the user manual).

2. There is no power getting to the switch. Start at the B connection on the switch and work backwards toward the regulator and the engine looking for (and resolving) any bad connections. You’ll likely encounter a fuse along the way--be sure it’s good and its socket is clean.

Do you have power to the Green wire? It should have power at all times, if not the fuse holder could have some corrosion or the fuse is blown..

The black wire on your ignition switch passes through the PTO Switch on its way to the ignition coil. It should have power when the key is in the Start or Run position.

The red wire activates the starter via the solenoid.

It sounds like you are simulating the actions of the ignition switch with your jumpers and everything else is working as it should if the green wire has power and the switch is good. Using the drawing for the 103990 switch and a meter to confirm the switch is working properly. Could be some corrosion in the socket to the switch was aggravated by getting wet. If that is the case a good cleaning could do the trick.

Might be a bad connection at the ammeter I would remove the ammeter from the circuit and just hook the two wires together.

The item you have circled in green is the PTO Switch, with that unplugged the start function is disabled and ignition will only have power with the key switch in run or stare AND someone in the seat.

He said he had previously bypassed the ammeter.

Must have missed that. My bad.

I’ve decided to start this thread to keep this info together.  It’s about this C-161 I have.

It showed up at my house one day around mid-2021 as a “parts” tractor.

I had no idea this was going to be left at my door, abandoned, tired, unwanted.  I can’t remember a lot of what I was being told about it as I was staring at it wondering why I was chosen, apparently, as the one who was to strip it of it’s organs and transplant them into some other “being”.

By the time those who brought it left, even though I never said it until just now, I knew I was going to attempt to resuscitate her.

No longer an “it” she was certainly worthy of a shot at another life.  16 HP Kohler, Sunstrand Hydro and hydraulic lift!  I had already fallen in love with the C-100 I grew up with that I later inherited, but this girl had something extra, something different about her that I thought was …
      appealing.

Parts tractor?  Not if I can $@%# help it!

She was glistening.  Maybe it had something to do with the rain that day on the ride over.  But she IS glistening!

Well fellas since I had to sell off my Wheel Horses I felt like I didnt belong anymore. The Lambert and the Speedanza are cool but THIS IS a Wheel Horse Fourm. Well guess what....... Im back in ! Picked this up a little while ago. Saw it on CL and jumped right on it. Not a model I know anything about but it does say Wheel Horse on the side of it ! I am so excited to have it and the best part is that it runs and drives!!! It does need some work... I think the hydro is leaking as a saw a puddle of oil on top of the deck. Checked the dip stick and was hardly any in there. When you raise the deck it seems to come up higher on one side then the other. Seat is horrible, someone glued vinyl on it. Front head light lens busted, rear one is busted and no lights work. came with wheel weights for the rear but nothing else. Still trying to figure it out. I just got it home and off the truck. As usual any info I would love to hear about it. I dont know the year, I believe thats a 16 hp Kohler, not sure but it runs really good. Not a fan of driving it by a stick, seems like something you have to get used to then maybe like. Right now it just seems funny but I only did a little lap in my yard. I think I got a smoking good deal on it that makes me even happier.

      Hi Guys,
I have a ‘91 520h that sat for a couple of months and was working fine. Now it won’t turn over with a new battery by the key switch. I jumped the starter directly from the battery and it turns over. It doesn’t always engage the pinion though.
I checked the blue wire from the key switch to the starter solenoid. It shows just under 12v when key is off and no voltage when key is in start position. Is this correct?
Also, the PTO switch light on the dash lights up when in start position as well. The all the safety switches were overridden when I bought it. No fuses either🙄. That’s my next project.
Need to get this baby going... Expecting 1-2’ of snow tomorrow night!
      Thanks for any advice!
      Cheers,

I can't seem to locate the oil plug on the transmission/hydro of the C161 auto.  Can someone please show me where the heck it is!?!?  I would think it was right on the bottom somewhere near the filter but I do not see or feel anything that looks like a oil drain.....

      Thanks for your help,

Well it was a nice day. And the sun shining through the snow. Makes for a nicer video and whole lot more fun than blowin through a blizzard!  I hope you'll agree. Video of clearing out snow after the storm with my Wheel Horse C-161 manual 8 speed with Snow Thrower Attachment
