Utility Trailer Tiedowns

Recommended Posts

8ntruck

I've carried a couple of loads on a recently acquired utility trailer.   One thing I noticed was a lack of good tie down points on the trailer.  I've looped ratchet straps around parts of the trailer that make adequate anchors, but are not designed to be used as such

I found a kit for the trailer that has 4 D rings that bolt on to existing holes in the trailer frame.  Seems way over priced for what it is - 4 each of D ring, bolt, nut, and washer.  Currently looking at cost of buying the components separately- wouldn't surprise me if it is cheaper.

What have you all equipped your utility trailers with?  D rings? Track systems? Flush mount rings on the trailer deck?

In the past I've simply drilled holes in the frame where I needed an attachment point.

This worked well with a thick frame.

Our new trailer is very nice but not as heavy duty. I'd prefer to add materials instead of removing them.

E track or X track can be nice for the wide variety of attachment points.

BUT it is slippery.

And the tracks will need to be cleaned out with a strong garden hose or compressed air.

This is what I'm doing for our new trailer.

This trailer has potential to haul 6 tractors so I'll be installing 12 D ring sets.

My plan is to use the router to make pockets in the wood above the cross beams of the trailer. Set the ring mounts flush.

2 of the 4 bolts for each pocket will be through steel.

I drilled holes right into the trailer. Quick and easy. In addition, I added heavy duty eye bolts and D rings like @953 nut notes above... I also have a hand crank cable winch up front. Perfect for tightening loads front to back...

I used D rings and 3/8" x1 1/2 " lag bolted them into the pressure treated decking.

Or welded on to the side rails.
