Wayne0 1,168 #1 Posted June 2 (edited) I've got one hanging around my garden area. My live trap isn't fat enough for it. What's good to lure it for it to be eliminated? I never see it when I'm armed. Edited June 2 by Wayne0
Tonytoro416 1,171 #2 Posted June 2 Trapped several and also trapped several with my 22 mag. Cantaloupe and watermelon are almost a sure thing. Cantaloupe when fresh and nice and strong smell they can’t resist
Tonytoro416 1,171 #3 Posted June 2 If you know where it’s den is spray the area with weed killer if not in your yard and they will move along. They don’t like the strong smell of roundup or herbicides

Beap52 1,394 #5 Posted June 2 I'm fighting either a ground hog or skunk hoping to take up residence under our front porch. Neighbors are clearing timber and I reckon they looking for new home. Had something in the live trap but a stem from flower kept door from closing and it escaped. Now the critter is doing it's best to avoid the trap. I read where skunks like greasy meat type so there is some canned tuna inside trap and a tomato in the event it's a ground hog. There is a hole made by said critter leading straight way into trap. I like cantaloupe too so that may be next bait. The rope is an effort that will allow me to let the invader to be released without elimination. Skunks always release upon "lead poisoning" and the trap stinks for a month or more. Hoping I can pull the rope and roll the cage over allowing the door to open. We'll see it that works. I wish Wayne0 success.
midpack 1,006 #6 Posted June 2 I had a skunk in a trap like that. Cover it with a blanket (I used an old shower curtain). Then you can move them no problem. After relocation, I stood the trap on end with the skunk on the bottom and fixed the door open. Tipped the trap down and off it went

Kennedy 130 #8 Posted June 3 I had several living under my deck. I trapped one with carrots and the other with cantaloupe. Cantaloupe worked the best of the two. After they were all gone I sprinkled cayenne pepper all along the edge of the deck where they were coming out. I haven't had any back since, this was last year. I may go freshen up the cayenne sprinkles again this year. Carrots also caught one of the chickens.

One time the door tripped on the way in and of course the hog could not get the cantaloupe. We watched it dragging the trap into the laurels. Rolling it around like a ball! they are hard to get rid of, especially if they have used the den to have young. They like coming back to the den. When the Amish bought the farm beside me to raise sweet corn and cantaloupe , the groundhogs needed to be exterminated. I trapped over twenty each spring for three years to get them under control. His oldest son Danny is now seven and took over the groundhog control. In addition to destroying the produce, the holes pose a real danger to the horses.
SylvanLakeWH 28,328 #12 Posted June 3 Just a point... not sure about other states, but in Michigan groundhogs are considered a nuisance pest and You can kill them legally, subject to local firearm limitations. You cannot legally relocate them, as you are just moving the nuisance to another location...

Wayne0 1,168 #14 Posted June 3 Thanks for the info. I'll try the live trap again. If'in that don't work, I'll move to more drastic measures. I've got my choice of calibers. 1

oliver2-44 10,689 #19 Posted June 3 In the last month I've trapped two Raccoons in my squirrel trap. My wife made some brown sugar coated trail mix that got a little too dark in the oven. Peanuts, almonds, sesames seed, raisins, dried cranberries Sure has been good bait for critters. They sure fill it up. They take a ride in the large green container for a dirt nap. Not the drop in. WAY too expensive! Bought the parts and rolled my own. Extended mag release, not the big paddle. Bolt hold open on the last round. A sweet shooter. Beap52 1,394 #23 Posted June 3 Went to visit a friend today and pick up some sawmill scraps he gives me so I can make projects with the grand children. I was telling him that I'm duking it out with a skunk (presumably a skunk) under our front porch. He said it reminded him of a tale one of the old men had told at the local restaurant's liars table. According to the old man, when he was young, a skunk had taken up residence under their house and it's entrance was below the front door. A neighbor told the boys that if they waited for the skunk to come out, they could grab ahold of it by it's tail. All they had to do was swing the skunk around and it couldn't spray them. Later the neighbor ask the boys if they caught the skunk and how that worked out for them. The reply "It worked great, until my arm got tired!" My friend has Alpha-gel syndrome. Normally this is attributed to being bitten by a tick but in this case, the doctors believe it was because he was bitten by horse flies while mowing on a tractor. He said he had five welts on his back from the horse flies. From what I understand the disease is gotten when an insect bites a deer and then bites a human. David was bitten several years ago and he said that the doctors allowed him to eat pork at Easter. He said he "pigged", out.

Daily, the skunk would evade my plugging of the previous evening's holes by digging new ones. I read that skunks can't resist cat food so I dumped a spoon full in the hole that he originally had dug, the another at the entrance of the trap and a small glob at the back of the trap. Got up this morning and low and behold a ticked off skunk was trapped. He was soured and walking up to it I could hear it thumping it's feet and as I laid the sheet over the trap I got a good whiff of skunk spray. Now, I had a stinkin' skunk and a wife commenting about the skunk smell around and in our house. Again, google provided an antidote of Clorox and water and the sooner it was sprayed the better the results. Apparently, waiting too long allows the oils in the spray to attach and stink longer. That skunk is now under the big front porch in the sky. I bought 12"x12" patio blocks and soldiered them around the perimeter of the lattice work. Now a critter will have to tunnel 14 inches deep to find access to the inner sanctuary of my front porch. By the way, I mentioned in earlier post that I tied a cord to the trap with expectations that I could flip the trap over and allow the skunk to escape--I have no idea what that skunk did with my rope. I didn't spend much time looking for it but it certainly was not left lying like the picture shows above.
Wayne0 1,168 #25 Posted June 6 I have to travel to Bangor area this weekend for my Brother's burial. I'll dig out my Hav-a-heart trap when I get home and see if I don't have a heart. He's a fat rat. I hope he fits.
